Don't smoke outside!

Postby Jagalonia » Wed May 01, 2013 6:14 pm

http://www.nugget.ca/2013/04/30/city-adopts-outdoor-smoking-ban

So, in a nut shell, this small city passed a bylaw that prohibits smoking in public areas like parks, trails, and beaches (Of which there are 3).

personally, I think a time restriction would have helped, like say, no smoking in those areas between 0700 and 2200, because smokers, (Most of which don't understand exactly what the bylaw implies) are pretty pissed off.

What are your views on this, NSG? Is it a breach of rights? Or a step in the right direction?

If I wasn't so out of breath all of the time, I'd probably take action against this.

Well, smoking isn't a "right", but then again it's not illegal either. I think, as long as you're not around children, then you should smoke wherever you want. Like a bar for instance. Children and pregnant women shouldn't be in a bar anyway, so why can't smokers smoke in bars?

2 reasons.
Bars are normally restaurants during the day.
Pregnant women make great DDs.

Because the people who work there have a right to clean air.

I'm a smoker, but I do not support the idea that smokers should be allowed to smoke in public places. But restricting outdoor smoking as well is just idiotic.

The outdoors isn't considered a public place?

Because smoke isn't exactly capable of choosing where it goes.

I believe in no social regulation besides control of really heavy drugs and abortion, so....yeah. This is breaching rights. Life, Liberty, Property.

I'm not sure what state your from (or if your from the states,no offense meant)but most states have banned smoking in "public" buildings with some states exempting bars from the code.

Guess which state I'm from.

*look at my flag.

Every time I go into a full restaurant, they give us an option to sit in the smoking section. Which I honestly don't care, because I don't believe it has that drastic of an effect on my health unless I were to live with a smoker 24/7 for many years.

I have no idea where that flag is from, flag ID is not a specialty of mine, my apologies. Secondhand smoke restrictions are directed more towards the restaurant workers that have work in it than the patrons.

South Carolina.

Where I'm from, the restaurant workers usually all smoke.

Ok, I wasn't defending it just offering an explanation.

I think it is more about limiting butts, because it is easier to catch someone who has lit up then to catch someone leaving a butt on the ground.

The bylaw in question is in Ontario, Canada. Where smoking in public buildings and business is already illegal.

Canada is just a non-annexed state of the US. :p

I didn't read that I'm sorry, I'm one of those self centered Yanks that thinks news only comes from the US, but I digress, I hate the smell of smoke personally and think people who smoke near crowds of people are inconsiderate but I'm not sure I'd go so far as to further restrict people from smoking.

I'd be pretty ticked. I like to smoke, I like the outdoors, and I like to smoke outdoors. I don't see why, if I'm not around children or blowing smoke into peoples' faces on purpose, that I shouldn't be allowed to smoke in those areas. I'm not hurting the park/trail/beach by smoking there and I'm not being offensive, so what do they have against it?

Banning smoking in outdoor public places is just stupid.
