BBC: tough love "good for children"

Postby Tokos » Sun Nov 08, 2009 2:40 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8348938.stm

Children brought up according to "tough love" principles are more successful in life, according to a study.

The think tank Demos says a balance of warmth and discipline improved social skills more than a laissez-faire, authoritarian or disengaged upbringing.
It says children aged five with "tough love" parents were twice as likely to show good character capabilities.

yeah, I don't know what to say, beyond "No shit." I'm sure someone will contest it though.

Seriously, what's next, them saying that eating balanced meals is good for your health, and that good education is a desirable thing? [end of sarcasm]
Ghosts represent the portion of each person's body that is taken away and held in slavery in a firey hell-dimension because of taxation.
Ultimately, their appearance is a futile appeal to the blinded masses to embrace Objectivism.
Will someone not please think of the ghosts?

Heh. No shit.

Note that it's contrasted with authoritarian parents. As in, something as different from this as lassez-faire or "disengaged."

I have the sneaky feeling that what immediately crops up to mind as "tough love" is classed as authoritarian. :eyebrow:

I think what they're trying to say is you should play catch with your son but give him a smack round the ear if he swears at missing the ball

That'd be my guess. Where as an authoritarian parent smacks him regardless ;)

Swearing is human-generated in case you forgot. What's next? Kids getting detention for questioning a teacher? Swearing is really made-up words that are only questionable to society because some fiercely conservative nutjobs decided to twist meanings of words that really are just ways of expressing frustration.

And, as it turns out, several curse words have a definition other than what we attain to them in modern times. A faggot is a bundle of sticks, a bitch is a female dog, a bastard is someone who doesn't know their father, etc. etc.
