Computer help, please

Postby Station 12 » Sun Nov 08, 2009 2:24 pm

I have a computer with multiple OSs. Problem is, I need to transfer a file from Linux to Windows, and the two OSs have a separate file structure. And for reasons I won't bother explaining, I can't use the internet to do this.

Linux will read Windows file systems... so from linux, you copy the file to the Windows partition.

After booting up your linux OS mount your windows partitions in RW mode. Transfer the files. Enjoy :)

And if that doesn't work, can't you just use a jumpdrive?

Also if your problem is that you can't boot into linux: use a knoppix boot CD. There is also a program for windows that will let you transfer files between linux and windows but it is not worth bothering with since you can do it so easily from linux anyway.

Would be far easier to simply boot to linux, mount the windows partition, and copy the file.... Besides, if the NTFS-3G driver in linux can't access the Windows partition, nothing else will either....

Um. I should have mentioned I only really know how to use windows and linux is very confusing for me. How do I use RW mode?

EDIT: Nevermind, google will tell me.

Yeah google will be a good choice. Just as a hint for some of the info you want (you will need the device name of your windows partitions). Look in your /etc/fstab file

You can look at it by typing: less /etc/fstab

If you were able to paste me your /etc/fstab file I could probably tell you the exact commands to type but I'm sure your Google search will give you a good idea of that also.

I am assuming, based on what you have said, that your distro is being really careful and only mounting your windows partitions in read only mode thus preventing you from writing to them.

Are you not able to get online from your linux distro at all?

Now that you are saying you only know how to use windows can you tell us what distro of linux you are using? Is it possible that your windows partition is already mounted in the proper mode and you are just looking for it?

depending on your distro it should be in the /mnt directory.

In linux filesystems are "mounted" under directories. So you may actually be able to find all you need there. It is hard to know exactly what you need without more details though.

No, it's my Windows that can't access the internet. I'm using Linux right now. I just need to move a file to windows because it won't work under any windows emulator things. (E.G Wine)

Code: Select all
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda5
UUID=63f7bd80-53ba-4bc0-9784-539c14623f69 /               ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda6
UUID=1a48b194-3247-4de0-b99e-b1fb0b965936 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0

EDIT: You posted while I was posting. If I'm understanding "distro" correctly then I'm using Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is a really nice system distro. Are you sure that is all of your fstab file? If you typed the command I told you try pressing enter a couple times in the terminal window to see if there is more. I only see your linux partitions and your CDrom defined in here.

I presume your Windows partition is on /dev/sda1 -- the first partition of the first hard drive. To check this, use a tool like GParted, and look at the list it gives you for the NTFS partition. That'll probably be where your Windows install hides.

Try 'sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt' or similar, ensuring that the directory /mnt exists. If all the appropriate magic works, that should leave you with your Windows partition mounted on /mnt, and thus part of your linux filesystem. Using your preferred filebrowser of choice, copy files back and forth to your heart's content. When done, either just leave it, or type 'sudo umount /dev/sda1' if you feel like being thorough.

This might work, assuming all assumptions I've made are met. If it doesn't, say where it fails, and we'll go from there.

Tried it again.

Code: Select all
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda5
UUID=63f7bd80-53ba-4bc0-9784-539c14623f69 /               ext3    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda6
UUID=1a48b194-3247-4de0-b99e-b1fb0b965936 none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/scd0       /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0       0

That's all I got. I tried scrolling and pressing enter, but that's it.

EDIT: I'll try that

That's only six lines. It should be all that's there, as most terminal apps display 24 lines by default.

True. I was just trying to be sure that was all. Now we know for sure. We just need to find out where his windows partition is. Apparently ubuntu does not mount it by default or place it in the fstab file.

Here are some instructions for what looks like an old version using the ubuntu gui. I mostly use ubuntu as a server so I have no idea if it looks like anything on the default WM.
