What do you think of America's ability to lead the West

Postby Libertarian California » Sun Apr 28, 2013 8:43 pm

What the title says. I'm not asking whether you think America deserves to be leader, or best represents the qualities of the Free World. I'm asking what you think about America being the voice of the Free World, and being the protector of it?

My opinion is that this policy of being protector of the Free World is bankrupting us. However, there seems to be no other nation that could currently replace if we step down (unless you want to live in a Chinese dominated world). So I'm a bit divided. I do want to heavily tone down our military presence world wide, but I still want the US to be the sole superpower and I want Pax Americana to survive.

What do you guys think?

America built the current system, and obviously we benefit from it, and the rest of the free world has greatly benefited from it as well.

I'd like to focus more on the Pacific and the Americas rather than Middle East and Europe, but I think as you said, we're stuck. There is no other viable replacement, at least for a decade or two.

We weren't really chosen. At the turn of the century, we were already quickly rising to prominence, and after World War I, it was clear we'd be a big deal some day. After World War II, no one was left, and we became a big deal.

After WWII the US and USSR were titans, and after the fall off the USSR the US was, and is the sole remaining titan. We have the ability to do basically anything we want, when want, where we want, assuming we have the stomach for it. When you sit down and think about it is quite awe inspiring. Fucking sweet.

Okay. But who should replace America as the leader then? Who can replace America as leader? (realistically).

Orrr we could let people in other countries do what they want to do instead of trying to impose our values on them. We aren't a colonial power why are we acting like we are?

In a purely idealistic sense, but if history has taught us anything, the absence of power creates a vacuum which is filled violently.

And for the history books, Pax Americana needs to last more 70 years. 8)

I agree with this. We should mind our own business. But if that happened, who would fill up the power vacuum we leave behind?

I'm willing to guess the EU will take over in this role as the US shifts attention to the East.

FINALLY IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS!!!

It's not French,it's not Spanish,it's Inyurstan
"Inyourfaceistan" refers to my player/user name, "Inyursta" is my IC name. NOT INYURSTAN. IF YOU CALL INYURSTA "INYURSTAN" THEN IT SHOWS THAT YOU CANT READ. Just refer to me as IYF or Stan.

Except we now live in a time where even with a once more multipolar world, everything is so vastly different that it can't be compared.

With America's tendency to jump at any situation where European nations should involve themselves in, people here forget that some nations in Europe are still considered Great Powers.

Well, we're paradise compared to all of the other nations in the West. The title of "Leader of the Western World" will not be given to any other nation any time soon.
