That said, I oppose the idea that our country is something perfect that we must idealize, the only proper course of action is to actually make this country a decent place to live in. The rampant Nationalism inherent in the opposition to Obama is far more frightening to me than anything Obama's administration is doing.

you are absolutely dead on with that statement. even as a staunch conservative myself, i am appalled at the nonsense that spews from the mouths of Obama's opponents in my party. nationalism is just as much a concern to me as socialism. b/c nationalism always translates into imperialism. just as democracy translates into socialism.

And if you want to know, I do hold the Christian cross responsible for all sorts of death and tyranny, so don't even think I have a whole lot of love for that symbol.

The swastika is a racist symbol because of the Hate speech associated with it as well the atrocities committed under it. The same is true for the stars and bars. The United States does have a history of atrocities, but it also has a history of commitment to improvement and change. That is what patriotism is to me, working and struggling to make a more enlightened , a more free, and more just society.
