Do you use IRC?

Postby Katganistan » Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:06 pm

I do, quite a lot -- both for chatting (irc.esper.net #nationstates_general and others) and for work here as a mod (#themodcave on irc.gamesurge.net).

If you do use IRC, what servers and channels have you found to be the most interesting?

I used my own channel and other channels. I've never been a fan of the "normal" channel. Really, MSN is far preferable.
NationStates remains an excellent educational tool for children. It can teach you exactly just how far people will go to gain extrajudicially what they could never gain legitimately. ~ Questers

I've been using IRC aslong as ive been online. There doesnt appear to be any real NS related channels though aside from some minor region based ones. I shall check the ones out you mentioned.

I used to be fairly active on IRC, but now I'm limited to gamesurge-#nationstates and the mod channel -- and I don't talk very much in the first one either.

Truth be told it doesn't appeal to me much anymore. I'm not sure why. For actually having conversations with people I mostly use Skype nowadays, and MSN, except MSN always disconnects me after about ten seconds of late so it's not proven particularly useful <.<

Internet Relay Chat.

Basically it's main focus is large scale chatrooms, called channels, that look like this.

EDIT: Mind you, the appearance varies according to which IRC program you use, so it might not look as hideous as that one.

NO.

Perhaps I've just been on the wrong channels, but it has a crude, debased feel to it. So I only use it when there is no other alternative. That and if I want to idle with other idlers.

Not anymore; I did for a decade or so, but over the past couple of years I've only been using mIRC for the non-chatting features (mainly $calc and /timer)

IRC is so 90ties, Katganistan you're old. :)

But I did use it A LOT in those times. My server was one from the VUB and my channels were #vlaanderen, #belgium, #holland and #usa.

I liked it a lot, but suddenly, little before the year 2000, the majority of the users left (to MSN I suppose).

Next to chatting, I liked to 'nuke' @ with a big mouth. Especial guys that claimed that they used Linux and that this was bulletproof, blahblah… :)

I've never used it before, and I didn't know there was a NS IRC. I've just started using it to see what it's about.

Yes.

Unless of course it's not OK for a woman to ask for a female to ask for a female officer to carry out body checks. In which case, the answer would be no.

I wonder why, though, as you don't need to register or look at adverts with IRC. You cant IM people though, maybe that's the catch?

I tend to be connected to freenode and foonetic, however most of the time I’m not in any of the channels. When I am, it’s usually #xkcd on foonetic (and sometimes xkcd-related ones, like #bucket), and #vim or #ubuntu on freenode. I also connect to Mozilla’s one when I want to bug my dad.
