Polygamous and incestuous marriages have both existed in the past - they were legal, conducted by the Church and approved by the state. They involved heterosexuals.

On them - to be honest I have no conceptual problem with them. Consenting adults, healthy relationship - good for you. As far as I know there is no sizable number of advocates for either.

Human and animal - no consent, no legal rights as a person, no marriage.

Simple.

As far as I can tell, Liberals are pushing for more and more civil liberties (which isn't necessarily a good or bad thing) and eventually, this is going to come up. Years ago, inter racial marriages were unacceptable, and I'm sure gay marriage was just...unthinkable at the point. Now, we have inter racial marriage, and gay marriage is starting to rise in most of the world except for a few nations that are refusing to let go.

Except both polygamy and incestuous marriages of some type have been legal in the past, so aren't unthinkable at all.

I believe the civil law should operate on the principle of consent, taking into account third party effects and indirect costs of course.

This means things like gay marriage, incest, and polygamy should be allowed, as long as everything happens between people who can provide reasonable consent.

Why should society be bothered about whether you have two husbands? Or two wives? Or 1 one wife and 1 husband? Or your relationship is a triangle. You have your two partners, they have you and the other partner.
