Dogs

Postby Jingoist Hippostan » Sun Jun 07, 2009 8:45 am

I just wanted to start a thread for the debate of man's best friend. This is specifically due to my annoyance at people around my town, who have the unfortunate habit of walking their dogs without leashes. While this is legal in some parts of the town (Bike Trail and a couple other places) it creates the issue of people who think that no leash law means you also don't have to make any attempt to control your dog. I've come close to being attacked a couple times by dogs that really shouldn't be off the leash (Or outside) at any point, and it's aggravated because their owner has decided they don't have to be within five hundred feet of their dog. They also get extremely aggravated and act like you've done something offensive when you attempt to keep the dogs away from you (Not like hitting them, just shooing them) and giving me obnoxious, stereotyped crap about "Aw, he wouldn't hurt nobody, he ain't never bit anyone" despite the fact that, you know, I'm not going to assume an apparently unattended dog that's running at me and barking is a harmless fun little pet.

So NSG, dogs. Best thing ever? Is your dog such a cute widdle smart guy? Are dogs stupid and annoying?

I like dogs alot, but a lot of them just mindlessly eat things and jump on people. Which is fine, as long as you don't have a mastiff.

I do think they're super-cute for the most part, though.

I'm a dog lover, or maybe dogs love me. Anyway, I currently have 2 dogs, and they are very well behaved. They like to bark but are otherwise harmless.

Never liked dogs and never will. People who own dogs are plain asshats. Its impossible to sleep sometimes when there're like 20 dogs barking at each other in the dead of the night

That's part of my issue. The dogs really aren't the only problem. The main problem is people who think the laws about how to keep your dog don't apply because their dog is "nice."

This is, of course, aggravated by the bit where most people think their dog is nice, regardless of how psychotic it actually is.

I have one dog. As much as I complain that he's dumb, he's just stubborn. That little snot has the largest English vocabulary I've ever seen. It's just COMMANDS he has trouble with! >:(

I still love 'im to death though.

What? Your experience of dogs =/= dogs in general. My dog barks once at night - 11pm, when the cat wants in. She curls up at the end of the bed and that's it, not a peep until the morning.

I like dogs, if they remain at an appropriate distance (i.e. 25 meters away or more). However, I fear and distrust them, as I fear and distrust anything that has a mouthful of sharp teeth, can run faster than a human, and is descended from a beast built to be one of the planet's most dangerous predators. And nonetheless have managed to inveigle their way into the homes of millions of unsuspecting humans. Admittedly, this doesn't really apply for the yappy little ankle-biters, but if it's any larger than (say) a badger, and especially if it enjoys running around and barking loudly, GET IT AWAY FROM ME.

I love dogs, have grown up my whole life with at least one in the family. What I don't like are irresponsible dog owners who have no understanding of how their animal thinks or what proper obedience training is. Example, if your dog happens to be one of a running breed, it might be a good idea to keep the animal on a leash. If your dog happens to be one of the terriers, dogs meant to chase and kill small animals, it might be a good idea to keep the animal on a leash. And so on and so forth.

My dog, I do let off the leash sometimes. Like when I throw the frisbee for him out in a field. Or if I'm out hiking on trails I know are not well used and even then I'll have the leash out ready for him. He's pretty good camping, doesn't stray out of the campsites, even with other dogs around. But again, I've got a 20 foot lead he's always on, tied to the bumper or a tree. Would I trust him off leash out of my view or control? Of course not. Would I trust him around small children alone? Hell no. He happens to be a springer spaniel, an incredibly loyal pack dog, and he ranks at the bottom in our household. Doesn't mean he isn't incapable of acting out of nature and harming others. He is a living, breathing (and thinking) creature after all, not some accessory.

Amen. Just getting a dog based on "aw, he's cute" is a recipe for disaster. Breeds are broad-brush personality types, and individual dogs can vary within the breed. Buying a dog without research is like having kids without prepa-- oh.

I hate all dogs, and they all seem to take a dislike to me too to the surprise of their owners who always say how their dog is friendly, and never normally acts like that.

As I said earlier my dogs like to bark, when they are barking when they aren't supposed to like at a visitor I tell them to be quiet and they listen (the female tends to whine though). They don't go outside and run, they remain in the yard and won't go out on their own without a leash. They are house broken and obediant, I haven't trained them to do any special tricks but they no better than to beg for food and they also know to stay off the furniture when they are wet. I think I have some very good dogs.

My cat on the other hand will open the dryer (I'm still unsure how!) and climb in to snuggle up to the soft and warm clothes making them all smell like him and gets hair all over them...
