Hadron collider brought down by a bird and a baguette

Postby Steenia » Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:04 am

Seriously, why are they keeping such exposed pieces of equipment so unprotected for? Maybe nature is trying to destroy this thing?

This is too weird: A bird reportedly has dropped a "bit of baguette" onto the world's largest atom smasher, causing the machine to short out for a period of time.

It's just the latest mishap for the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, which scientists plan to use to get insight into the universe's origins. The LHC, which has a 17-mile track to circulate protons and is located underground on the French-Swiss border outside Geneva, Switzerland, is the largest particle accelerator in the world and cost about $10 billion.

......

Had the machine been activated, the baguette incident could have caused the LHC to go into shutdown mode, the UK's The Register reports. The Register quotes Dr. Mike Lamont, a worker at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (or CERN), as saying that "a bit of baguette" had been dropped on the LHC, possibly by a bird.

A call to CERN's press office was not immediately returned.

ZDNet writes that the baguette in question did not have a chocolate filling:

The [CERN] spokesperson said the bread, which was "naked and unfilled", had caused a short circuit when dropped on an electrical installation that supplies energy to the massive experiment. While the bird was unconfirmed as the definite culprit, it had been spotted beforehand near the substation carrying bread, said the spokesperson.

Everything that has gone wrong with the LHC:

Wikipedia wrote:On 25 October 2005, a technician was killed in the LHC tunnel when a crane load was accidentally dropped.
On 27 March 2007 a cryogenic magnet support broke during a pressure test involving one of the LHC's inner triplet (focusing quadrupole) magnet assemblies, provided by Fermilab and KEK. No one was injured. Fermilab director Pier Oddone stated "In this case we are dumbfounded that we missed some very simple balance of forces". This fault had been present in the original design, and remained during four engineering reviews over the following years. Analysis revealed that its design, made as thin as possible for better insulation, was not strong enough to withstand the forces generated during pressure testing. Details are available in a statement from Fermilab, with which CERN is in agreement. Repairing the broken magnet and reinforcing the eight identical assemblies used by LHC delayed the startup date, then planned for November 2007.
Problems occurred on 19 September 2008 during powering tests of the main dipole circuit, when an electrical fault in the bus between magnets caused a rupture and a leak of six tonnes of liquid helium. The operation was delayed for several months. It is currently believed that a faulty electrical connection between two magnets caused an arc, which compromised the liquid-helium containment. Once the cooling layer was broken, the helium flooded the surrounding vacuum layer with sufficient force to break 10-ton magnets from their mountings. The explosion also contaminated the proton tubes with soot.
Two vacuum leaks were identified in July 2009, and the start of operations was further postponed to mid-November, 2009.
In November 2009, a bird was suspected of causing an electrical short to the LHC by dropping a baguette onto an unprotected electrical installation. Because the LHC was not activated, the short did no serious damage.

Fun.

So next, small pockets of the world will disappear? Or is that after a few more steps?

Maybe an actual bird will find its way into it.

The LHC is quite literally the most complex thing ever built by man. Some degree of difficulty is to be expected with any new device, let alone one like this. Given how precise the engineering requirements are, I think they are doing a very good job so far.

Edit: Also, people who think it will end the world are either reactionary morons or people who haven't actually done any research on the thing. If the energy densities it can produce were sufficient to destroy the world it would have been destroyed ages ago. Every day, there are particle collisions (from cosmic rays) in the upper atmosphere far more energetic than anything it can do.

I'm surprised that we haven't been turned into strange matter, sucked into a black hole, turned into a fine particle field, or completely destoryed in some way, matter, or form by the LHC yet.
I'm still expecting half of Europe to disappear the second they turn the damn thing on.

A bird dropped a piece of baguette onto a power station that supplies energy for the LHC and it shuts down.

This is amusing.

I read it. I just felt like joking around.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (in the newspaper I think) that the Higgs boson that they're trying to find is supposed to be so "horrific in nature" that it's discovery in the future is causing problems in the past so as to prevent its discovery. I can't find that anywhere, though.

They are not in fact theories. They are actually hypotheses, since there's no evidence for them.
