Protesters saved by government health care

Postby Senestrum » Sat Nov 07, 2009 12:22 am

First up I will say that the purpose of this thread is not meant to start some giant shitstorm over the reform bill. Rather, I'm just sharing something that I found to be really quite hilarious.

ThinkProgress wrote:Thousands of protesters came to Capitol Hill yesterday for Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) protest against health care reform, capping months of fear-mongering about the dangers of so-called “socialized” medicine. However, the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank notes that at one point, one of the protesters had a heart attack. Luckily, federally-employed medical personnel were able to quickly attend to him — even though they were part of government-run health care, which is supposedly quite dangerous:

More ominously, a man standing just beyond the TV cameras apparently suffered a heart attack 20 minutes after event began. Medical personnel from the Capitol physician’s office — an entity that could, quite accurately, be labeled government-run health care — rushed over, attaching electrodes to his chest and giving him oxygen and an IV drip.

This turned into an unwanted visual for the speakers, as a D.C. ambulance and firetruck, lights flashing, pulled in just behind the lawmakers. A path was made through the media section, and the patient, attended to by about 10 government medical personnel, was being wheeled away on a stretcher just as House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) stepped to the microphone. “Join us in defeating Pelosi care!” he exhorted. A few members stole a glance at the stretcher.

By the end of the day, “medics had administered government-run health care to at least five people in the crowd who were stricken as they denounced government-run health care.”

You have to admit this is pretty funny, regardless of whether or not you agree with the reform bill. The sheer level of irony involved is staggering.

The irony's been there long enough to rust, this is just the icing on the irony cake. And yes I did mix metaphors, so what?

This is HILARIOUS!!!!!   I'd have laughed even more if the victims had been carried off on stretchers yelling stuff about federal healthcare being dangerous.

There is a HUGE difference between the Obamacare bill and government run ambulance services.

The paramedics weren't democrats.

They should have refused the healthcare on principle if they're actually against it. If I were, I would.

Its not about the heart attack, its about what occurred immediately thereafter.

You people do realize that ER and ambulance transport isn't free and they will be billed someway or another?

Wait, this is NSG, nvm.

And? It's still arguably government run health care, which is what these people were protesting...

A majority of hospitals are government managed, that has shit to do with the healthcare debate which is purely an insurance issue.

Exactly. If the services are provided by the state and funded in part by the government, regardless of whether you are billed, it is government health care.

If a "majority of hospitals are government managed" why do so many hospitals have Christian imagery and chapels? Isn't that in conflict with separation of Church and State? Unless they are privately owned, I suppose... ;)

Ah, but as Parthy pointed out, their real problem is that people they don't approve of might get health insurance coverage... It's okay if the government pays for a portion of the cost of them being treated...

There's a difference between paying later and not paying at all. After all, it's better to take your "customers' "houses and cars or whatever later than to have them die before they can give you their money.
