Not having to hear CNN blather? Good on you. The number 50 seems to have come out of no where. Everything I've heard from the police and hospitals has been 22-23.

CNN says:

Massachusetts General Hospital said it was treating 22 injured people, six of them in critical condition. Tufts Medical Center reported that it was treating nine people. Brigham and Women's Hospital said it received between 18 and 20 injured. Combined, that brings the number of injured to as many as 51.

After the last few incidents like this that CNN has covered, I'm more than a little cynical. However, they do seem to be accurate on this one now.

What's the point of only partially shutting down lines?

To prevent people from clogging the cell lines. Emergency services are probably using them on a different band, also logs of phone calls to determine what calls originated from what areas.

You don't want to do that in case of a bombing attack. Because if you do, there's likely a second explosion to take out anyone who's helping the survivors, causing more casualties.

It's better to record it so that investigators get more clues.

As a first responder, running in blind clueless of the situation without a proper size up is what gets even more people killed. It's easy to play the part of hero, when your safe and sound sitting in your comfy computer chair, isn't it?
