I absolutely love the assumption that growing up around smoking will instantly cause ill health. I'm fucking healthy. Well I mean, I'm not, but that's because I don't eat right for shit.

The only one who has illnesses or side-effects from smoking in my house are the people who fucking smoke. Who woulda thought!?! I've seen the affects of smoking, and will never do it myself. I personally don't want to die like my Great Aunt.

When do you see people smoking around kids at schools? Teachers who smoke MIGHT take a break outside, but no kids will be there. And Hospitals often have smoker designated areas.

Industrial pollution is a different topic, as though it pollutes, it provides jobs and stimulates economies, so my advice would be to try and reduce industrial pollution by planting trees around factories, putting smoke filters or something like that in the smoke stacks, etc. until the technology for us to eradicate air pollution completely is developed...
