I wonder if you do the same at combustion-propelled vehicles (cars, motorbikes, airplanes, trains, buses), combustion-heated buildings and combustion-generated electric power.

We need to get away from the 'quick fix' of legislating away a problem rather than promoting changes in behaviour through education and group efforts.

Do you not see the amount of educational and group efforts to reduce smoking?

I see lazy, uncreative efforts.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

You never said anything about banning alcohol.

That's... that just makes no sense as an argument. Are you really saying "Ban one thing, might as well ban them all"?

Why not? Why stop at smoking? Why not ban all drugs?

Smoking directly infringes on others. Drinking does not.

Clearly you've never encountered drunk people.

That you say it's not forced shows you don't understand how it works.

Clearly...

Person lights up and makes someone else's options "leave" or "take that smoke".

Leave. No one is making you sit there and breathe the second hand smoke except yourself.

In a work environment, they don't have the "leave" option.

Smoking is banned indoors, is it not?

And you think I don't understand how it works. I can't believe I'm arguing with someone who thinks that he's above looking after himself.

I quite like not having tar in my lungs just because someone else does, thank you.

And you won't get it. Instead, you'll get lung cancer and other interesting little lumps from breathing in traffic fumes and other air pollution.

I see a lot of enthusiastic efforts but they are often quite wrong, such as banning flavoured cigarettes to stop minors from smoking when minors aren't allowed to buy cigarettes anyway. There doesn't seem to be much thought put into a lot of anti-smoking efforts.

Good. The less they're around the better.

Honestly, you can have your smoking in restaurants. I'll just be going to a lot less restaurants. I'll stand by prohibiting it at hospitals, schools, and government buildings. Places where people HAVE to be. I'll also stand by my comment about smoking around kids in enclosed spaces (e.g. cars). That's a SERIOUS threat to their health and well-being and shouldn't be allowed.

I personally hate smoke, to a point that I stay away from those things. If there is one thing I don't like of my favorite aunt, it is the cigarettes.

The OP mentioned "alcohol free areas" here in the UK and to be honest, they're usually flouted. But the idea is a good one.

Personally, I think we should ban smoking in a limited number of public spaces: e.g. outside of schools, hospitals and/or shopping centres. Generally speaking, however, I don't people smoking in public. My problem lies with them throwing away their cigarette butts. That really annoys me. But then, I'm bit of a greeny.

Littering is littering. There should be far harsher punishments for littering. People don't take it seriously enough.

This a good solution. Allow e-cig use in public but not cigarettes.

Depends on whether the smoker is upwind or downwind, I guess.
What´s next, a special armband to identify smokers ? Should smokers carry a bell to warn those around them, like Middle Age lepers ?
Shouldn´t political correctedness care for the rights of smokers too ?

14 year olds who have never smoked in their lives have a big opinion on smokers. Light up and love it. Who the hell wants to grow old in this world anyways, tobacco is your best insurance against growing old. Sitting in a urine soaked diaper in a wheelchair, your family stopped caring a long-ass time ago about you, the only thing they're after is a, hopefully, fat inheritance. The fable of growing old happily and healthy is exactly what it is, a fable.

Kurt Vonnegut called smoking a stylish way of committing suicide. Couldn't agree more.

Then stop posting on NSG and go smoke yourself to death already, if you want to die so much.

Please don't read this as me wishing death upon you. Merely a suggestion on what is the practical choice in life for someone who wants to die - dying.

Meanwhile I rather like living, as Tyrion Lannister once said. Even if I did feel like dying, I wouldn't give a shit about dying stylishly - and that's debatable, because it's literally just filling your lungs up with smoke, nothing stylish about that - and would just jump off a bridge.

Have fun enjoying your stylish way of suicide when get erectile dysfunction from smoking.
No I'm not wishing death on you. I'm just pointing out you won't find cigarette smoking to be a stylish way of suicide when you're suffering from uncomfortable health complications caused by smoking.
