I remember a fast food place (I think it was Burger King rather than McDonalds) in Philly that did that, too. Some do here, but it's a tossup whether they do or not. In my observation, McDonalds in areas with a higher black customer base tend to have mayo more than others - but to back to your southern thing, that could be because a lot are either southern transplants or descendants of southern migrants who came north. Probably the same reason the best bbq places tend to be in black neighborhoods (up here, at least, not sure about the south).

Best BBQs in the south are the ones little black churches run to raise funds for church.
A pity they are never opened on Sundays.

Makes sense, BBQ takes time to cook, so at a slow station you can have an attendant watch the meat cook and handle the gas sales.
The churches normally pay their Reverend about 12,000 for his religious duties and then set him up with a BBQ joint he runs during the week. If he pays himself then dumps the other proceeds into the church the local taxing authority will often give it religious exemption. Many a church service I have talked into with the promise of free BBQ afterwards.

And for people retching after reading that, people *love* Spam in Hawaii. It's the state with possibly the largest Spam consumption per capita.

It's a small grill in the sun. The hair salon down the street has a massive charcoal grill they sell from, though, that's great too.
