Venezuelan election thread

Postby 4years » Sun Apr 14, 2013 8:07 am

I suppose I'll bow to the innivitable and create the thread with the election being held today and all. I, of course, am hoping for Maduro to win and continue Chavez's legacy. So NS dare I ask for your opinions on the matter?

two articles:

I'm not supporting the Socialist. Despite him being Liberal, I'm supporting Henrique Capriles Radonski.

If Maduro wins, I hope that he'll generate an economy based on more than just oil.

That won't happen. Maduro won't stop that. If you hope that, you have to support Capriles.

Nope. Venezuela needs a strong left-wing leader right now.

Capriles is a right-wing humanist, and probably a corporate sellout by United Fruit Company or some else. Maduro is the current lead of Chavez's party, and is pretty much on the same line as his predecessor.

Sure:

Nicolas Maduro: Member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela; Vice-President under Chavez; Interim President.

Hernique Radonski: Member of the Justice First Party; Opposition Candidate to Chavez in the 2012 election; came closer to defeating Chavez than anyone else ever had.

Capriles isn't that right-wing. He's closer to the center/center-left although his party is mostly centrist/center-right.

And I support him because Maduro would only continue Venezuela's slow decline as he fails to diversify their economy.

Caprices is right-wing look at his origins and his role in the coup attempt.

His origins?

And the whole issue with him and coup is nebulous at best, especially considering he was pardoned.

Origins: I was referring to his role in founding the right-wing Justice First party, before the rather nebulous opposition block and his self-description as a fervent catholic. Not to mention how he swung to the left in order to have any base at all in the last election.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henrique_Capriles_Radonski

Coup: He led the storming of the Cuban embassy, hardly nebulous. And so many people were pardoned afterward that it is really meaningless expect as a critism of Chazev for being to soft on the opposition.

Incidentally, are you suggesting that people who have previously been involved in coups shouldn't run for president of Venezuela?

To quote the article I posted: "Capriles was initially charged with illegally exerting the Cuban embassy." It is under political career. as previously stated, he was pardoned, which is distinctly different from being found innocent; in fact I would argue that pardoning someone presumes his/her guilt.

I am suggesting that people who were invoked in coups against fairly elected governments of the left that didn't indulge in shooting their own people are most likely right-wingers. The government Chazev attempted a coup against did shoot its people.

He went on trial and was acquitted.

So its ok to go and get a dozen people killed, because some people got killed three years previously?

Maduro is not Chavez. Yes he will most likely continue Chavez political ideas but he really needs to do something about the economy and important infrastructure. If Maduro loses it will be bad news for Nicaragua and certain other nations which get financial help from Venezuela.

This Capriles seems to be like those prior Venezuelan leaders of decades ago that got Venezuela into economic problems in the first place.

So finally we all know Venezuela is far from being communist. In the US and other places some were saying Venezuela was communist. So if they were why are they having a new election after just having had one. Why not just make VP. Maduro President. They could have dragged there feet and have done it. There Supreme Court would most likely have supported that move. But they did not. They instead opted for new elections has written in there constitution. So when it comes to this particular election, Venezuela seems to be more democratic then the US. Remember that unbelieveable Florida election fiasco some years back.

I don't like either of them, but I'll take Maduro over the rabid right winger Capriles. Hopefully Capriles will quit politics once he gets his ass handed to him (again).
