ABC TV series, "V": Satirizing Modern Politics?

Postby You-Gi-Owe » Fri Nov 06, 2009 9:05 am

Is ABC television's remake of the science fiction series, "V", satirizing modern politics with it's pokes at political/media spin and social issues like universal health care?

I don't think so, considering production for things you see at the movies and on T.V. in 2009 finished production in early 2008.

The producers and writers say that was not their intent.

I don't know if I believe them.

Not just this Administration, but these have been "recent" political topics for a while, plus I detest "spin control".

Not seen it but I imagine that yes, the poke at political/media spin no doubt is a comment on Modern politics (and by this I mean all politics in the last decade or so). After all the original V was an allegory (very poorly hidden) for fascism, showing how despite the "it couldn't happen here" belief, fascism could take a hold of the US.

However, I doubt it's specifically a point towards the current Administration and more a highlight of trends in HOW modern politics takes place - the spin, the media focus, the populism, lobbyists/powerful interst groups etc...

But I would have to see it to comment fully

i think that some people are looking at this far too closely. The original series was an allegory for the rise of Nazism and fascism in an it couldn't happen here scenario.

If it truly is anti-Obama, than I say it's just as easily anti-media sensationalism and of Fox News in particular. The Visitors asked the reporter not to ask any questions that would portray them as negative and only say good things about them in return for advancing his career. I could just as easily picture the Republicans telling Glenn Beck and company to do the exact same thing.

I say just enjoy the series for what it is, a story about aliens, spaceships, and a struggle against fascism and oppression.

I don't know why anybody would be surprised if it is... We see it all the time.

Remember that episode a few years back of E.R. when there was a gun toting maniac looking for Dr. Green, and shot a few people along the way? Then some civilian pulled his own iron out and they shot each other?

Both came to the E.R. where all the popular and "enlightened" characters all scowled at the guy who, by shooting the maniac, saved the day. They scowled 'cause they didn't like him having a gun. Meanwhile the coarse, abrasive characters were the ones patting the guy on the back.

Obvious where the writers' opinions were in that episode, eh?

So yah, V is satire. Most TV is. Kinda funny that somebody earlier compared the interview with Anna of the Vs to an interview with Beck. I was thinking an interview with Obama. Doesn't matter, the point remains the same, although 'twas Anna promising Universal Healthcare, all you had to do was trust them.

I'm thinking the V writers aren't big fans of Obamacare.

Unlikely, since those elements were present in the original version, too - what, 20 years ago?

They may have updated some of the phrasing, and some specifics, but it's basically the same concepts they were running during the Reagan-era version.

Which doesn't mean it's not satirising American attitudes to healthcare and media spin - just that it's not specific satire of current politics.

And they'd be right. If it was a law drama, guns for self-defence or citizens acting as police would be portrayed more sympathetically.

But in an Emergency Room, I don't think you'd find many staff who thought a tooled-up populace was a good thing.

Considering that all fiction has a strong base in reality, it's plausible. But then again, just take it as it is, a show.

I could easily see it with %administration and %network_news_channel, too. I don't see why you're only picking on Fox News. :P
