The reason they get away with it is become it's mostly just a formality. The people themselves aren't particularly religious, and the state religion doesn't do anything there.

And they're slowly starting to get rid of it anyway.

How is a government claiming only one religion is true a celebration of all ideas? I'm a staunch Christian and am totally not getting this.

Not at all. The entire political spectrum has shifted dramatically to the right since Reagan. The GOP went from being center-right to far-right and the Democrats took their place. The only leftists that are still in power are people like Bernie Sanders, and they are few and far in between.
