How to respond to racism?

Racism is clear preference of one race over another by seriously putting down another race through generalizations or plain falsehoods.

While I don't make racist jokes because I generally don't find it to be that funny, I go a bit further than that but stop short of verbally or physically
"putting down" other races. Possibly the most racist thing I support is White flight, but I'm otherwise fine with different skin colors than my own existing.
I don't want to become in the minority.

Unfortunately, when I've encountered racism, I was usually so caught off guard that I did not know what to say. I once told a neo-Nazi that his antisemitism wasn't cool, but that's about the extent of my talking back to racists.

When I was in China -- which is most of my experience of racism directed at me -- I'd just roll my eyes at people and walk away if they were being blatantly racist. Gets past the language barrier.

In middle school when somebody said they slept with my mother (a common joke at the school to say to people), I would say 'really, what time'? 'What does she look like"? Etc...

This worked, they got bored and walked away. Obviously they had no proof meaning their joke failed to land.

If they have proof of their statements it might mean they are not being racist. As I said before, numbers don't lie (if the numbers are from truthful sources).

Racism is not racism if you are using facts to back up the claims.

And OP? My advice to you is to ignore the racism, and try to become friends with that person. Racism is spawned by ignorance. The best thing you can do is not give in to it. Heck, if you try to befriend the people who insult you, you might help them overcome their ignorance. It might not be that easy, but it's worth a shot.

Ignoring color of skin and focusing more on nationality and religion is a better way to go. It would solve racism based on color of skin and get to valid reasons to treat others with suspicion.

Religion can be changed. It is a choice. The GOD and beliefs you choose are a reflection on your character.

Nationality is harder: Nations can go from being uncivilized and/or violent to being good. Ex. Germany 1940 to Germany today. They went from being Nazis to being very tolerant (to the point of banning intolerance).

Japan 1940 and Japan today. Japan went from being an aggressive and imperialist Japanese supremist to being a peaceful nation that keeps their racism non-violent.

Nations can change and when they change we can adjust our views of people from that nation. This is why it is OK to be intolerant of nationalities IF we have valid reasons to back up these claims.

True, in the army there was a conflict when a younger black guy (from NYC) used the 'N' word and an older black guy (from the south) told him to stop. The young guy did not right away and the older one had to yell and intimidate the younger one and the conflict ended. It likely was difference in age and culture (the USA has various regional cultures).

It is weird many blacks support this word when it was used in a negative way for a long time. I guess they are ignorant of the past though.
