Saudi Arabia is attacking Yemen

Postby Hairless Kitten II » Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:05 am

The Saudi air force has attacked rebels in northern Yemen following Wednesday's killing of a Saudi security officer in a border area, reports have said.

Saudi aircraft had targeted strongholds of the Houthi rebels on the Yemeni side of border, spokesmen for the group and Arab media said.
A Saudi official told Reuters they had hit rebels occupying its territory.

The attacks came after a Saudi officer was killed and 11 were wounded in a raid by the rebels on the Jizan region.

The Houthis said on Wednesday that they had taken "full control" of a mountainous section of the border region of Jabal al-Dukhan.

Attacking rebels in Yemen =/= attacking Yemen.

Because the rebel leader said the Saudis hit a crowded market filled with civilians.

Of course, the rebel leader would have absolutly no reason to lie or mislead the world press to gain favor and international support...

Would comparing this rebel leader with Bin Laden not result in improving the last one into a nice guy?

Why would that result?

If one likes Salam (well, whomever the leader is...Salam is just the spokesman. With an ironic last name.) then perhaps it would garner sympathy for Bin Laden. Maybe. But probably not. However, if one dislikes Bin Laden, then the comparison would be more likely to damage the reputation of Salam, given that he is less well known.

How are we to assume the rebel is a nice guy? Not everyone supposedly fighting for the "oppressed" are nice people.

Further, I'd say Osama thinks he is fighting for his people who are oppressed by the West...

No, that was ment for HC, for the fucking stupid title. When I saw, "Saudi Arabia is attacking Yemen", I thought they were at war.

Clearly the U.S. should invade both countries and replace their despotic governments with stable pro-American democracies. At that point, all violence will end and democracy, peace, and capitalism will flourish throughout the Middle East forever.

And it will only cost $5 billion.

How does this have anything to do with Muslims? Sounds like it has something to do with a state attacking people with aircraft to me.

(How I would phrase it.)

It's not really on the subject, but I think your objection is valid. Perhaps among radicals to whom Osama may be a hero, such a trite comparison is actually flattering.

On the subject, and never having heard of the Houthis before: perhaps they're the good guys. Both the Saudi and Yemeni governments seem to hate them!

(Though their motivation seems tribal and religious, not any sound basis for a revolutionary government imho.)

Attacking military forces is insurgency, not terrorism. The Houthis are accused of killing a "security officer" with over-the-border attacks ... and thus, the comparison with Osama is trite and inaccurate.

Your title does indeed suck. This event is far below the level of a inter-state war ... though border incidents do push things that way.

And I agree that using jets instead of troops is cowardly. It probably does invoke sympathy for the rebels among the people who count: the community they live in and can recruit from. Force multipliers are for real battles, and using such excessive force for what should be a police matter very often kills innocents, turning the friends and family of the victims towards the rebels and against the government.

There, I've tried to answer all of your rambling points. We mostly agree, hmm?

Once again, you pick a story, start a thread and simply chat about it. Do you have a firm opinion or much knowledge about the Houthis? Does this minor insurgency fit into a larger pattern which you do have a strong opinion about?

Your motives in starting threads like this are unclear. Personally, I think you just like starting threads and don't have much motive, but I understand how others try to fill that void by imputing motives to you which you don't have.
