[rant]OK, Root is virtually a walking wicket. The only time he has not failed (along with a handful of 30s), was when the Australians were totally downhearted that I could have scored a century against him. You always know that Root will be out, it's a given. Cook appears to have lost his legendary patience and concentration, as well as Trott. They've both reacted to repeated calls that they're too slow etc. and yes they get starts, but I'd say that you get to 20, 30 quickly, then you knuckle down and grind out a hard 50. You play a nice hook or drive for 4 one ball, the. You fucking defend the next one. Play the bad ones, block the good ones. I use that tactic and we play 30 over games. They have 5 bloody days. Pietersen has never been patient, and I don't expect him to do well, whereas Bell is still supposedly in his good patch, but his 6 last innings might signal the start of normality. Jonny Bairstow is shit. I'm sorry, get him out of there. You've had time to prove yourself, and you haven't. Bring Compton back in, or Carberry. I don't know what's happened to Prior, but he just gets himself out, there's no more free-flowing run-scoring Prior, he just gets in a hole and gets himself out.

Argh.

The question is, will the England management accept that there is a problem? I think it's almost a guarantee that, barring injury, the exact same lineup will be used at the Oval, with the only possible change I can see being Taylor in for Bairstow.

They haven't always been this conservative. Dropping Finn in the 2010-11 Ashes springs to mind.

Bairstow's in the side as reserve wicketkeeper. He'll continue to be picked on that basis, I suspect.

Hang on. In the side as a reserve wicket-keeper? Does the ECB know that there is in fact, just one wicket-keeper in a cricket team? OK if Prior gets injured then obviously you'll have backup, but I think it's worth taking the chance with just one keeper, as almost every other side in the world does, and have a strong number 6 who can score runs on regular occasions.

I wasn't really expecting us to have any. I don't think a target of less than 300 will be enough, but then again, I don't think I could call it either way.

I'm starting to think for the next test maybe England should send in Bres to protect Root from the new ball.

Also, everyone has been focussing on England's top order problems, but I was just thinking, this is probably the worst run of form with the bat I can ever remember Matt Prior having.

300 for Australia to win. That's about 50/50 in my opinion. Very close.

Gonna be an Ashes classic. We've got to bowl Australia out because of the time, and the Aussies just have to not lose wickets...

You were contemptuous of Cook's performance, but actually that's what an opener is supposed to do: occupy the crease, see the shine off the ball, and let the rest of the team see how the wicket is playing.

Perhaps Rogers is capable of doing likewise, but I'm sure Warner isn't. He'll get runs or get out.

Using an appeal on an opener, in the third over. Oops.

Touch wood!

But I'm not getting too confident just yet. When Australia's top order collapses, it really collapses. No 19-year olds to save us this time, either.

Anderson gave away too many runs, though to be fair there were some good chances too.

Swann will get wickets, though now Warner has a sniff of the runs he'll be expensive. I blame Anderson.

4/100 or so by Swann won't be enough without some other bowler stepping up.

Night Watchman a bit later? Australia almost never do that.

Up to 8 overs like Anderson, Broad's economy rate was nearly as bad. One good over (1 run) improved those figures slightly.

Then there's Bresnan, who hasn't looked like taking a wicket, and Swann who's getting hit.

Who else is there? Pietersen?

Rogers out for 49 (off 100 balls), and yes it was Swann who got him.

Aus 109-1

ED: Good luck Khawaja, had rotten luck this series. First ball hit for 2!
