After all the times I've seen England struggle to finish off a tail, I'm still not confident they can win this...

I mean look at the stats: 45 tests and just 2 centuries. Anyone in the top 7 really should be scoring a lot more than that. His average is significantly beneath his peers, and he rarely makes big contribution's with the ball. What with his prone-ness to being out LBW (whether it be a technical thing or a mental thing), as well as a fragile body, don't you think it's time to give someone else a chance?

After a quietish first three Tests, Broad's come to life...1 more for a 10-wicket haul.

He's an all-rounder, so of course his stats with bat aren't top-order, and this stats with ball aren't like a pace bowler who can't bat.

The last decent all-rounder England had was also the best player they had in decades (Botham). Of course, that meant he had to be captain too, which gave the team a single point of failure.

I'm not saying Watson should be captain of course. The captain should always be a dedicated batter, because they're less prone to injury. But he'll stay on the selection list for those times Australia doesn't know before the match whether it needs more bats or more bowlers.

Harris out now. I'd say England have won this match.

Shame the margin will be this comprehensive, rather belies the fact this Test was very close for 3.5 days…

Note that I've never said a word against Broad. Even when his first ball of the innings went for 4 byes.

He can bat too. Maybe call him an all-rounder?

His batting's not quite good enough, for me. Plus, his averages are quite far apart in the wrong directions.

But an allrounder who's opened for the majority of his test career, he should be having a better average..

He's had his chance, 45 tests worth of chance, and he simply hasn't performed. Granted he's a supremely talented cricketer, but he hasn't quite cut it at the very highest level. There is a large handful of Aussie crickets (batsmen and bowlers) who've been given an equal chance, have performed better and have still been dropped (Phil Hughes to name one)

Yeah, I guess a test batting average of 25.4 isn't quite enough.

Watson's is 34.5, and bowling they have almost the same runs/wicket average (31.~)

When Broad's on a hot streak he's really on a hot streak. Second time this Test season he's done this…

Broad's second career Test 10-for.

That's not a bad little average that from Root, 23.33. Be nice if he could keep that going...

Decent batting average. Bowling though ... no comparison with Botham and inferior to Watson.

Why not just admit that you hate him for something that happened off the field, and now you're gloating because he was injured in this match and then failed with the bat?

I got a bit heated when Khawaja was given out by the third umpire (when he plainly wasn't, which no-one disputes now). Another poster advised me to cool it, so I did.
That poster wasn't YOU. If you'd told me to cool it, I'd have told you to fuck off. You're the worst kind of sports fan, the kind who sulks when your side is losing (that's excusable) but does your best to make the opponent feel bad when your side is winning. That's not excusable: it bespeaks someone who gains more satisfaction from others losing than from you winning. It is, in a word, nasty.

Hey, hey, I meant no mean intention, that's not how I do things. I'm a naturally negative person, and having grown up with total Australian domination and a s**t English team, I think I'm granted a bit of banter when we finally start performing on a repetitive basis. And how exactly am I making you feel bad. OK, my post about it must feel bad to be an Aussie, and that could be misconstrued as a gloat, but trust me, it wasn't, and I never meant it to be.

There are many players I dislike, Watson is one of them. Jade Dernbach, Dale Steyn, Jonny Bairstow to name three, but all for Cricket reasons. I harbour no prejudices against him, and nowhere did I post anything along the lines of "Oh I'm so glad Watson is injured" or "I'm so glad that Watson in particular failed with the bat."

I considered Root before (when I was speculating about the captain putting on a part-time bowler). On the stats Pietersen would be better, but I think his bowling success is well back in time.

That was when Australia was 1 and 2 wickets down though. Putting on Root now is more like a consolation prize for his failure with the bat. Understandable, him being a young player who would benefit from a show of support (kind of like moving Agar up the batting order in the previous Test, or persisting with Khawaja at #3), but at this stage of the game it's just an indulgence. If he'd got a wicket, it would have been at the expense of Broad who did the real work.

Broad gets the final wicket as I finish typing this. Nice.

Congratulations England. Series won!

Give Onions and Tremlett a game at the Oval...

A consolation prize perhaps, but also useful. Conceded only the one run and ate up the time until the light came back.

I really can't believe what has happened. A few hours ago England had no chance. A shame for the Aussies - 3-0 is a bit harsh on them for the way they've fought back since the second test.
