James Buchanan or Andrew Johnson, though it's hard to indict them without also indicting Thomas Jefferson, for their presidencies were abject failures due to the issue of slavery and the trials of the Civil War and Reconstruction that came with it, and it was Jefferson who did more than any other president to perpetuate the slave regime

I think Truman did an OK-to-good job - he wasn't spectacular, but I can understand and sympathize with what he did wrong, and he did a whole lot right.

The worst would have to be Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, or...well...Bush 42 may have been a nice guy, but...it's hard to defend much of anything he did in retrospect.

Washington was expected to lead the Continental Army to victory against the British and secure the colonies' independence, not to destroy the Empire itself. Yet today, the end of the American Revolutionary War and the loss of the Thirteen Colonies is regarded as the end of the first British Empire - the second Empire would see Britain turn to other continents.

In my opinion, the worst president is James Buchanan - for being dangerously indecisive in a time when America was divided over slavery.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson were the worst. :p

In all seriousness, Buchanan, Coolidge, Pierce, Johnson, George.W, Hoover, Carter (as president, he was horrible) and Harding were all bad, I can't decide which single one was worst.

Easy one - George W. Bush followed by his father. Both, leading wars only in the name of economical benefits, totally disregarding everything else.

Yes, true, and its last major territorial loss was late into the 20th century, buuut that was the "Second British Empire", not the "First".

Can't believe I forgot Harding. Fucker got inducted into the KKK on the White House lawn. Dubya never did that, to his credit! :p
I don't think Wilson is THE worst, but he's not far from it. Racist, ivory-tower asshole.
And why Coolidge? Guy seemed pretty...boring, really.
I think Carter was just unlucky as fuck and got elected at a terrible time, and so became a total scapegoat.
