There's already a World Series thread.

Here's the first post that announces that the Yankees won.

Pirates FTW.

Congrats Yankees. After all, you are... the Yankees. Surprise surprise, you won. How unexpected.
And to the Phillies: you're not 'the best' if you can't beat the Yanks. I look forward to NOT hearing the phrase 'world champion phillies' on the radio every 2 minutes anymore.

Fixed, though I would like to know your reasons why?

And baseball is quite an entertaining game to watch especially after midnight as you lie in bed and drift off to sleep.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

Large market teams such as the Yankees (Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, etc) will always have an advantage in the free-agent market over small market teams, such as the Kansas City Royals, because they have more money, and can afford to outbid any other team if they really want a player.

Even when a small market team manages to build itself up via the minor league farm system, (the Milwaukee Brewers being a goo d recent example) it's best players inevitably sign to large market teams when it's time for a new contract (see C.C. Sabathia)

The NFL is the most popular sport in the US because of it's salary cap, which ensures that every team has an equal chance at attracting talent, at least from a dollar perspective. The NFL has it's top tier of teams change from season to season, and as a result the fans of a team can be confident that if it ain't happening now, it will happen soon (with the exception of Detroit and Cleveland) :p

MLB, meanwhile, trots out the Yankees vs the Red Sox every other weekend on national TV and expects the rest of the country to give a shit. They don't, because their team has sucked for years and they've moved on to some other sport where their favorite team has a chance to actually compete.

The NFLs collective bargaining agreement is set to expire soon, and it is likely that the salary cap rules will be eliminated or severely limited. If that happens, you can expect five or six teams (in large markets) to permanently rise above the rest, and small market teams (like the Chiefs, Packers and Bills) to quietly fade away.

So when the Yanks lost to the Marlins, or the D-Backs in the World Series, what was that?

It's a boring game. It'd be more interesting if they allow you to maim the other players.

Congrats to the best team, ever, in MLB history on yet another championship.

However, I found it kind of hard to emphasize with some of the players on the Yankees when they went on about how painful it was not to have won a ring in 9 years....

It's called revenue sharing. Steinbrenner writes out a check every year for $70+ million dollars which is divided amongst the small market teams. I believe the Red Sox, Mets, and maybe the Dodgers and even my Phils have to write out this check too (for differing amounts depending on payroll). Add all this up, and each team gets about 6 million or so from this alone.

Many of the owners of other teams are billionaires. Instead, they look at baseball as a business and only want to make a profit, so they don't spend, calling it out of the budget. Its only out of their budget because they made their budget to small. Steinbrenner and a few others care about winning instead of profit.

Maybe someone else knows this answer, but the richest owner in baseball operates a small market team. Can't remember which one.

It can be said that they "bought" their championship, and maybe they did. But those same players were available for the rest of the league too. If you remember, the Yankees entered both the Sabathia and Texiera sweepstakes only after other teams seemed close to signing them then failed too. There are richer owners then Steinbrenner out there. If only they had the passion of Steinbrenner. If they did, then there is more demand for these players, and the Yankees can't hoard them in. I am not a Yankees fan, but I don't fault them for the way they do things. I fault the billionaire owners of small market teams who operate it as a business and don't care about winning.
