Let's be honest here - Fords are terrible, terrible vehicles. Ford returning to the stage is a lot like Hitler returning from his bathroom break.

Chevy makes terrible vehicles, my mom had an 1997 Monte Carlo, that thing was a piece of crap. It always had to go to a mechanic for one problem or another. It only stayed in the family for 2 years.

Not in the least. Fords are just as good as any other cars.

Don't worry. They have hybrids. They're reliability is also on par with Honda and Toyota

without a new cash for clunkers program? my bet is on no.

Its hard to imagine otherwise, if they posted such a puny profit with all the help. The article sounded pretty upbeat for the coming quarter.

"In the near term, Ford said sales were expected to suffer in Europe, Germany in particular, as the government incentive schemes come to an end. The company also noted that recovery in the US and the British economies was expected to be slow."

.

The thing is though, they would have made headlines if they posted a dollar of profit. A billion is truly amazing.

The hybrid Ford Fusion gets better MPG than the hybrid Camry.

This, regardless of what has been said for Ford. I used to drive a Ford that was hardly dependable. My best friend drives a Focus that she calls "the Fuckus."

Until Ford, Chevy, and GM convince me that they are capable of making quality, safe cars with little environmental impact, I will continue to buy Japanese, thank you very much.

As a fan of Ford, a Ford owner, and an owner of Ford stock, I'm happy to see them return to profitability in North America (Ford outside North America has been doing OK for some time,) but profitability this quarter doesn't mean much going forward. The cash-for-clunkers program had the same effect as the post-9/11 0%-financing campaigns -- didn't so much spike total demand as pulled future purchases into the present. It's also worth noting that while Ford didn't take bailout money directly, it benefited from the bailout funds given elsewhere as it relies on some of the same suppliers as GM.

Ford quality has been quite good for some time, and my hope is that people who bought new Fords through cash-for-clunkers will be happy with their purchases and the brand's reputation will improve.

My dad was a Ford Fan. So my first two cars, (the ones he bought me, or I inherited from him), were Fords. Complete pieces of crap.

Once I went Mitsubishi, I never came back. From my unique experience, japanese beats american, even if spares and cars from american origin are cheaper around here in South america.

What did you end up buying? The Fusion is nice.

Indeed, my family has one. It's a very nice car. Before that we had a '95 T-bird, which was also a pretty good car, if less awesome in mileage (it had a cop car V8, so... yeah). That car was never the same after some asshole ran a stop sign and slammed into the rear end when we were backing out of the driveway.

They were terrible, I had one a few years back and it was piece of junk. HOWEVER, I think they have gotten their act together and are producing high quality vehicles these days.

I have a hidden love for Ford. I think a lot of people do, even here in Britain, though they are as afraid to admit it in public as Skoda fans are. I bought my Fiesta brand new five years ago, and it's never once had a single issue* besides routine wear and tear, and it still runs like new. Not only do they make a couple of desirable, yet totally impractical cars of their own (GT and the new Mustang), but they also turned around Jaguar and Aston Martin, which makes them O.K. in my book (well, until they sold Jaguar to the present owners, anyway - bleh).

Despite their circumstances I had no doubts that they'd be fine in the end, and I sorta knew that there'd be no need for government aid either. Considering the jumps in quality in their cars lately (particularly the Mondeo and Fiesta lines, which are both surprisingly gorgeous for such cheap cars, and well-appointed too), I'm quite glad that they did.

* Even as I wrote it, I knew I shouldn't have. I doubt it'll start up tomorrow morning now. I need to find some wood to touch... damn my cheap fake wood furniture!

I suspect Ford were responsible for stripping Mazda of all its originality in the early noughties.

Every Ford I bought was a disaster, Escort, Comet, Marquis, Taurus, they all fell apart.

Except my falcon, which got stolen in Chicago.

And our Pinto wagon which was cool.

Say, how does a major corporation celebrate its success?

Why, by ripping off the workers, of course!

"Despite signs of a financial turnaround, all is not well in the house of Ford.

Ford Motor Co.’s factory workers firmly and angrily rejected a proposal from management and union leadership to accept more cuts in their national contract as voting wrapped up over the weekend.

The concessions, which included a freeze on entry-level wages and limits on the ability to strike until 2015.

The rejection came the same day that Ford reported a surprising third-quarter profit of nearly $1 billion. "

Not available in the UK? If it is, it's not a competitor with the Camry; the latter is several levels above any Ford on sale here.

Good that hybrids are proliferating, and fair play to Ford for finally wising up.

it takes 4 to 8 years to develop a car so they caught onto the fuel efficiency issue awhile back.
