Saul Williams.

I'm not a fan of the materialistic and vapid rap/hip-hop that is so popular in N. America.. I like the stuff that is still firmly planted in revolutionary and social concepts.. not that "I'm on a boat"/"Whatever you like" bullshit.

Sure, they may have some good beats but the message sent out by this type of music is overwhelmingly negative and perpetuates a mindset that is harmful.

** Hip-hop is one of the genres I listen to most, but none of the albums listed had much relevant content to comment on.

It's illegal to carry it, but that doesn't really matter 'cause get a load of this, all right – if you get stopped by the cops in Amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I mean, that's a right the cops in Amsterdam don't have.

Jules: [laughing] Oh, man! I'm going, that's all there is to it. I'm fucking going.

Vincent: Yeah baby, you'd dig it the most...

Your over 30 right

I get it. You think because he dislikes shit-hop he must be "old". And anyone who is over 30 is pretty much dead anyway right? Everyone over 30 is too old to remeber what it was like to be young and so they keep young people down. Right?

Or maybe your just 15 and because of the way your brain is changing you have a persecution complex. Guess what it passes. Very quickly. Trust me, I'm 17.

Hip-hop has been dead since the late 1990s. Before it got hijacked by pop culture. Now its broken down into two groups. Those who are in it for the money and make their music for MTV so they can sell more records, and the ones who are in it for the money and go for shock value to sell more records.

Don't even get me started on "sampling" aka stealing.

Go listen to some Slayer.

\m/

Wait if you and all the other people who dislike Hip-Hop don't like it....just don't. Let us talk about Hip Hop and you can listen to your Strayer or Prayer or whatever you want it is.

I'd listen to anything from "Stones Throw Records". Especially Metal Fingers.

Rap is crap. Could you possibly put an option on there for "rap is crap"? If you could, that would be great.

I thought the eternal hip-hop question would be, "How can you prove that rap occurred?" (It's a reference!)

I am sadly white bourgeois in my hatred status-based rap (Jay-Z, etc). However, at least I can say that most rappers who are Serious just seem to obnoxious to me. Same goes for white boys making a joke of their whiteness. So most of what I listen to is in languages I can't understand, like French or Japanese. I may not have the slightest idea what they're trying to tell me, and I could listen to them talk for hours.
But the iconic rapper, in my eyes anyway, is the Notorious B.I.G. I don't know why, but there was just something about the way he said things like "Picture me being scared of a nigga that breathe the same air of me." Plus he was kind of fat. The man oozed pure cool, that's what I thought when I was in Middle School and it is what I will think up to my dying day.
Stuck somewhere between high school and old school.
Here's some bullshit I write. Maybe you want to read it?

I'm probably going to embarrass myself by miscategorising or something, but I really enjoy early Roots Manuva.

GZA's style is dreamy. Ditto Q-Tip and Rakim.

Most hip hop is garbage.

Just like every other music genre.
Pro: feminism, socialism, environmentalism, LGBT+, sex workers' rights, bdsm, chocolate, communism

Anti: patriarchy, fascism, homophobia, prudes, cilantro, capitalism

Rap is crap though. There's like three good songs. And they were all made 10 years ago :p

Rap =/= hip hop

I never said it was, but it is a large part of hip hop.

It's a large part of popular hip hop, yet it's not always the best example of decent hip hop out there.

I mean, I'm sure some of the crap that's put out there these days makes Grandmaster Flash (the master of turntablism) cringe. I'm more of an early 80's hip hop fan, when the music was stepping out from the ashes of disco and becoming the force in electronic music. Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Queen Latifa, etc. Those acts defined hip hop as something that could affect social change.

Then came MC Hammer...

Hammer wasn't bad at all by comparison to today's gang-banging ghetto trash.

Fix'd
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

Why is it crap?

Well for starters it's meaningless, they repeat the same words about 5,000 times. It's mostly about drugs, how crappy their life is or about buying women. It's really degrating to women. And I know that all songs repeat the same words, but they don't do it as much as rap does.

That's called the "chorus." All songs have one.

I thought we were talking about rap, not mainstream rock.

And I know that all songs repeat the same words, but they don't do it as much as rap does.

I wonder if I can find a picture of an ass with words coming out of it.

Yes, in fact I am Listening to [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1ITfZOovhc]This/url] while I type. Rap is a genre which I love, you may not like it but I don't really fucking care, have you heard a single rap song? They do not fucking repeat every word. Actually know what the hell you are talking about.

And I also have listened to rock music and rap is mostly about drugs and buying women.

Rock is mostly about drugs and degrading women.
Country is mostly about getting drunk and beating your wife/getting beaten by your drunken man.

Okay, get a song and show where the words are repeated 5000 times.
