Rap is crap though. There's like three good songs. And they were all made 10 years ago :p

Rap =/= hip hop

I never said it was, but it is a large part of hip hop.

It's a large part of popular hip hop, yet it's not always the best example of decent hip hop out there.

I mean, I'm sure some of the crap that's put out there these days makes Grandmaster Flash (the master of turntablism) cringe. I'm more of an early 80's hip hop fan, when the music was stepping out from the ashes of disco and becoming the force in electronic music. Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Queen Latifa, etc. Those acts defined hip hop as something that could affect social change.

Then came MC Hammer...

Don't be hatin' on hammer, you're just mad you can't touch this.

Plus hes from my hometown :p

Meh, I think hip hop is pretty painful to listen to. I'd much rather turn on The Who or The Doors.

Blueprint 3, T.I. v T.I.P.

Kanye West is shit now, he'll never be as good as 'Through the Wire'. Lil Wayne, boring. Ludacris I don't mind, but again prefer the older stuff.

I love hip-hop. Rap, not so much.

To me, the difference is whether the artist is trying to make a political statement backed by some good beats, or whether the artist is trying to make money by making his stuff sound as "pop" as possible.

I do own several ringtones. Everything from Blueprint 3 tracks to Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Angel Eyes" to Grieg's "In The Hall of the Mountain King" to the Wailers "Burnin' and Lootin' (live)." It's an obsession. :P

Oh, I'm not mad because I definitely wouldn't want to touch that.

I mean, don't you agree that Hammer began the commercialization of hip hop?

Come on, be honest with yourself. His older shit was spot on, but by the time we reach "Can't Touch This," his credibility was in the toilet.

I wouldn't know if he started commercialization or not, but it was inevitable either way.

Oh, you're right that it was inevitable. Yet it was Hammer's quest to gather street cred with his gangsta' rap release. Not to say that MC wasn't a decent artist. I think he got lost in all the commercialization of the time. If he spent more time identifying with his roots as an artist, I probably wouldn't give him half the shit I give him now.

Personally, I'm not happy with the direction of commercialization that hip hop took. There's great hip hop out there you never hear because it's all wrapped up in street cred, and all that shit.

I mean, honestly, I roomed with a guy who listened to crazy-loud hip hop during my Freshman year of undergrad. While I didn't find it displeasing, I would not really actively seek out pretty much any of what he was playing. Some violations of that trend, but not too many.

I don't see how killing Jews would get rid of hip hop.

The problem is mainstream hip hop is crap just like most of the rest of mainstream stuff. It's full of hacks, no talents, and fame seekers. Judging the genre by the mainstream would be like judging rock by the mainstream.

Above is my favourite hip hop/ rap musician. The majority of mainstream rap is so crap its painful. This guy kind of put my faith back in a genre that I saw dying a horiible death.

I beg to differ, mainstream metal, rock, and the like do have talent. Mainstream rap/hip hop consists of people practically masturbating to the sound of their own voice. May I remind everyone the mike jones song where its just him saying his name?

Mainstream anything is inherently shitty. Why? Because it is designed to turn profits, not to enrich the mind.

There are exceptions, like Jay-Z, who, on every record, has one thought-provoking track for every three tracks of shit. Not a bad ratio compared to Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Li'l Wayne, Taylor Swift, and even his wife, Beyonce, who are all zero-for-all.
