So, Kim Jong-Un declared war while at war with the same nation? That seems confusing.

Being Technically In A State of War, Legally, and Being In A War For Rizzle are different things. Israel and Syria are vaguely At War. Don't see that being acted on very often.

Shocking as it may seem, the whole "ho South Korea, we're at war now" declaration could be combination of: Kim Jong-Un making it easy to understand what he means, translators not knowing the full situation, and/or a deliberate attempt to make him seem like even more of a radge.

Well if this war does happen soon, at least a massive threat to everyone, like China, wouldn't get involved as far as I know. (Did Russia also walk away?)

Well, let's hope NK doesn't launch a secret attack on Hawaii. That'd just be unoriginal.

Never thought I'd ever say this, but to be honest I'm on the North's side in this. The pressure on the DPRK from the US has been staggering, and this new declaration is primarily a reaction to the US flying stealth bombers over the South. If there is to be peace and prosperity in the region, the US must back off, cancel these exercises with ROK army (which in the event of war would be put entirely under the control of US Pacific command) and roll back sanctions. Isolating the DPRK will only lead to more incidents like this.

Obviously not, although this situation has proved one thing: US diplomacy is tragically poor, even absent. Kim Jong-un is very, very far from a lunatic. In fact, his approach is extremely methodical - he is well aware that the only way a rogue state like his to get audience is to provoke a crisis and establish talks with the US that will have long-term benefits for both countries. How do you make a crisis ? You gear up for war. Full-scale war is not to be expected, but we might see some border skirmishes like the ones in 1968 or artillery exchanges like the P'yonan bombing in 2010.

The States actually see comfort in the status quo, because it allows them to maintain their 70,000-man military contingent in Japan and South Korea very close to China, using the Korean People's Army as an excuse for that. This is one possible explanation of the unwillingness of the American government to resolve this long-standing problem. The second explanation is that the policy makers in Washington are so narrow-minded that they genuinely believe Kim is mentally deranged and will attack them. Considering that the US has long traditions in being paranoid, and that the recently stationed B2s and B52s only serve Kim's plans, I'm inclined to think it's explanation No. 2.

As for the USAF taking out North Korea - that's beyond ridiculous, kids. If it were that easy, the US would've never had the need for decade-long ground operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Battlefield" doesn't exist in the real world.

If North Korea was left to its own devices, away from the interference of the UN and America, I doubt we would have these problems to-day. The Kim family care for nothing more than the consolidation of power. They know that having a war would most definitely mean their defeat. If they wish to hang on to their throne they will not start another war, unless that is, if they are deluded.

... they ARE deluded. :P Each successive Kim a bit more than the previous, imo. Add to that that I think Kim-Jong-Un isn't even properly in charge but mostly a figurehead of a military junta (the wrinkly men with the big hats), and it doesn't really seem as if the position of the Kims is quite as important as a cursory glance might suggest.

Meh. I don't believe that KJU is that informed enough to care about his country, since all be would probably care for is the goods his regime requisitions from the people. I mean, he looks like a princeling who has been fed by servants for too long to give much thought on governance. Thus, I think it is the military that is in control. If the North Korea's generals want to start a war, let them. They'll be crushed by either China or the US alliance.

China - They don't want American forces on their border, so in the event of war, they would probably to be claiming to be the goods guys and moving to crush regime and replace it with their own.

US/SK/Japan - Depending on who gets to Pyongyang first, if the US alliance does, then North Korea will probably be destroyed forever. Unless Japan rejects the idea of South Korea getting stronger. But thats another issue. :meh:

Yes and here is why. While it is true that the North Korean government has a history of making empty threats the fact is that these threats are becoming more frequent. North Korea is also more dangerous now than it was 10 years ago since they possess nuclear weapons. In addition to that North Korea has been becoming more and more aggressive over the years with the 2009 nuclear test, the 2010 unprovoked sinking of a South Korean Navy corvette, and the bombardment of Yeonpyeong. Kim Jong-Un actually seems, in my opinion, more insane than Kim Jong-il. There is actually evidence to suggest that it was Kim Jong-Un who order the sinking of the South Korean Navy corvette and the bombardment of the South Korean island to boost his military credentials. I won't put it past Kim Jong-Un to actually wage a full scale war and genuinely believe that North Korea will survive the wrath of South Korea and the United States.

Basically this.

Before with Kim jong-il he had nothing to prove. But this new fella might want to wet his appetite for some blood and violence. He certainly seems keen to follow the same rhetoric.

Yes, they are testing our patience for them to forge a peaceful deal with the south. If they continue to go on the same route then many countries are going to give up on Kim Jong-un's regime, revoke recognition of North Korea and support intervention instead.

In my opinion, it is more of deep annoyance, rather than fear.
