Your Views, Beliefs, and Criticism of Psychics?

Postby Untaroicht » Thu Mar 28, 2013 8:06 pm

There are a number of people in the country currently whom claim to have psychic powers and have actually found a way to make a living off of it. Psychic reading stores and websites are big business (in fact there are THREE in my home small town), but the scientific community has had it's doubts about psychics for the past several years.

I know that NS is often critical of religion due to it's lack of scientific evidence (or so people think), but what are your thoughts on "Professional psychics" and their businesses. Are they people exploiting human superstition in order to turn a profit, and if their businesses are scams, should they be illegal? Or are they really blessed individuals with extraordinary powers?

I personally remain extremely skeptical about it, as not much scientific evidence has come forth suggesting some people are born with supernatural abilities while others are not.

Can't decide if I have more disdain for those who would take advantage of others' gullibility or for those who are gullible enough to fall for such nonesense. It's clearly nonesense.

bullshitters

the question of whether i hate people who, for example, have lost a family member and are struggling to cope and are kinda naive/desperate more than people who cynically exploit them or even just legitimately believe their own bullshit is pretty easy to answer.
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

If psychics are real, why aren't more of them billionaires? Why did 9/11 happen? Why were we so unprepared for Haiti? Why are lotto winners usually random people and not the same ones over and over?

Meh I make no claim as to the veracity of psychic phenomena. I do believe that almost all people claiming to be psychic are just scam artists, but I won't say that no one is psychic because I simply don't know.

I would never trust a psychic. If I believe a psychic, it sort of make me feel gullible to believe them

I have not seen anything to suggest that there is any validity to any of it.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

A more accurate way is to say psychics are deceiving the grieving and vulnerable through cheap magicians tricks.
And the best you can say about them is some do it unintentionally .

they should not be illegal for the same reason magicians should not be illegal, they should however be treated as scum. The "psychics" not the magicians.

I got quite annoyed after the Haiti earthquake. A baby was taken from the wreckage and people said it was a miracle. It would have been a miracle had God stopped the earthquake. More wonderful was that a load of evolved monkeys got together to save the life of a child that wasn't theirs. ~Terry Pratchett

First, there are no psychics, there are liars. They should not only be universally hated, but illegal.

It's obvious bollocks, but as far as I'm concern, it's like paying for a magic show. So, if it makes people happy...

A buddy of mine was the Office Manager of a Psychic Hotline based in Homestead, FL in the early 90s. (He took great amusement that his job title was Psychic Overlord). His job was to make sure the phones and the billing and such worked properly, but he never had to deal with the psychic-seeking public. In August, 1992, Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm, made landfall in Homestead and shredded their office and most of their homes.
None of the psychics saw it coming.

None of the psychics suggested relocating.

None of the psychics had jobs the next day / week / month.

Carl survived the storm, hiding in the bathtub and clutching his precious Mac to his chest. His apartment was destroyed around him. He might be said to have a certain amount of skepticism about the whole thing, and I'd have to agree with him.

I have dreams and some dreams show stuff happening(obviously) but usually a couple days or weeks later things that happened in the dream actually happen, but usually only for around 5 to 15 sec. Started when I was 6, can't control it, but it does happen.

I wouldn't mind spending a little bit just out of curiosity of what they would say, don't need to believe to look at something.
