Dr. Jane Goodall Comes to Puerto Rico

Postby Buffett and Colbert » Tue Nov 03, 2009 3:11 pm

Well, a few of my peers and myself were privileged enough to be able to see Dr. Jane Goodall speak today! She has come to Puerto Rico to promote her Roots and Shoots programme which is geared towards the world's youth.

In case you don't know, Dr. Goodall is renowned for her fifty years of work with chimpanzees. She was key in the discovery of chimpanzees being not only omnivores, but hunters; that chimpanzees make tools (when it was thought that only humans could do so); this lead to the classification of chimpanzees as hominids and she also is very well known for her unorthodox methods which include naming chimpanzees, instead of giving them numbers. She also conducts much study into how chimpanzees think and feel (she studies depression, happiness, fearfulness, etc in chimps).

Well, it was a shorter presentation, geared to a slightly younger generation, but it was interesting nonetheless. She was quite inspiring, and is a true role model for the rest of us.

This little episode was particularly interesting for me because I got to speak with her for several minutes [semi-]personally, about what my school is doing to be environmentally friendly. The rest of the auditorium watched this and a local news channel filmed it. Public speaking has never been an issue for me in recent years, but speaking to someone so renowned, so accomplished, was truly exhilarating.

So NSG, in an effort to keep this from becoming too bloggy, I ask you this: Do you think environmentalism is something to pay close attention to? Who's work are you particularly fond of? What day to day things do you think improve the environment, and its inhabitants?

I kind of like the environment. I keep all my stuff there.

Mrs Jane "Chimpmolestor" Goodall?

I have heard and read about her a lot. If she ever comes here, I would gather a few hundred of my fellas and try to get her out of the country with posters and such. I don't know why you didn't even attempted to...

Apart from that:

I care about the environment. truly, not for profit or fame or anything, I really do.

Driving less, producing less garbage, and taking cold showers is a good start.

My goodness, are we closed-minded. Next thing you know, we'll be bringing race into things; oh sure, this candidate or this scientist might be speaking great things, but they're married across the sexual boundary!

It's a slippery slope. You discriminate against people for relationships with our closest biological cousins, and next up you'll be discriminating against relationships between race gaps.

Weirdos.

yah environmentalism is the new fashion now.
work? i don't know of any environmental work personally.
Day to day things improve the environment....well i recycle used bottles that would otherwise go to the dump, i re-use many plastic tubs for storage of food and i'm cautious about leaving lights and switches on. if nothing else it's something for me to do in an otherwise housebound day.
made a discovery today that would be the equivilent of finding out that neanderthal man used mobile phones.

Sorry, but I'm not impressed by Goodall in the least. I agree that the environment is important, but there are better ways of going about saving it than plastering your face everywhere.

I tried looking this up, and can find nothing on neither Wiki nor Google.

Like it matters, though. I've always been a firm believer in human-ape relations; do you realize how sexualized the bonobos are? An entire species of hairy lesbian sluts, man, and they're even closer related to us than chimps 8)

In what way does she do this? She does keep a relatively low profile considering the fact that she travels 300 days of the year working for the United Nations to advocate caring for the environment and animal welfare. I have yet to see a pair of Jane Goodall underpants. ;)

I read about it several years ago. As far as I know, she herself confessed to it. Not a better source than Jane Goodall herself.

Yeah, let's say that we are not altruistic anymore, but we do it because of the sexual gratification granted by large simians.

If I say I vote for Obama because I want to get laid with him, you would call me a lot of stuff, right? And you would actually try to contest my political views.

And no, I am not kidding. I read this years ago when I was working at the newspaper, I was shocked and double checked it, I am trying to find the source.
