The Coolest National Flag

Postby Korena » Tue Mar 26, 2013 4:44 pm

So, in YOUR opinion, what would be the coolest national flag out of the entire world?
Please post the picture (if possible), and give a brief explanation why. :)

My Favorite Flag: The South Korean Flag

Image

Info: The flag is named the Tae Kook Gi. The Korean flag symbolizes much of the thought, philosophy and mysticism of the Orient. Dedicated on the center of the flag is a circle divided equally and in perfect balance. The circle itself represents the absolute or the essential unity of all being. The upper red section is called “Yang” and the lower blue section the “Um” (Yin) and is the ancient symbol of the creation of the universe, day and night, light and dark, construction and destruction, masculine and feminine, active and passive, hot and cold, and et cetera. The central thought in the Tae Kook indicated that while there is a constant movement within the sphere of infinity, there is also balance and harmony. This thought of Tae Kook, called UM (Yin)-Yang philosophy has influenced all the fields of oriental cultures such as philosophy, logic, science, and military strategy along with martial arts. The ancient oriental philosophers, viewed the universe as a place in which harmony could be attained by the reconciliation of opposing forces, one such force, Yang, is associated with expansion and separation, and the other Um (Yin) with contraction and assimilation. These opposites continually balance and complement each other. This thought taught martial arts the wisdom of using nonviolence against violence, soft against hard, circle against straight line, and so on. The three bars at each corner also carry the ideas of opposition and balance. That is why I believe that the Korean flag is the coolest.

What do you think?

Interesting, the South Koreans don't allow hot-linking to their flag.

Mine

I don't know. I honestly haven't spent much time looking at other nation's flags. However, I can tell you that Maryland has the best state flag.

I'll look through an index of national flags and see what pops out.

Some candidates:

-Nepal. They had the nerve to make it non-rectangular.
-Kenya. Spears and shields are cool.
-Northern Mariana Islands. It's got a ridiculous width-to-height ratio, looks cool, and I used as the flag of Phocidaea until December 2012 :P
-San Marino. It's two rectangles. "We don't even give a fuck, you want a flag, we'll give you one."
-South Africa. Colorful and non-racist.
-Sweden. Yellow and blue go well together.
-Uruguay. It's like Greece, but if Greece still had a sun cult instead of Christianity.

You might not like there politics but the North Korean flag looks nice.

Comparison of the SK. and NK. flags.

Image

The flag created in 1948 consists of three stripes - blue, red, blue - separated from each other by two narrow white lines, the proportions being 6 : 2 : 17 : 2 : 6. The hoist of the red stripe is charged with a white disc containing a red five-pointed star. The blue stripes stand for the people's desire for peace, the red one symbolizes the revolutionary spirit of the struggle for socialism, and white - a traditional Korean color - represents the purity of the ideals of (North) Korea and national sovereignty. The five-pointed star signifies the happy prospects of the people building socialism under the leadership of the Korean Worker's Party. The white disc suggests the yin and yang symbol ("t'aeguk" in Korean) in the flag of the Republic of Korea.

Jarig Bakker, 28 Sep 1999

Its not a national flag but the winner is the flag for the Central Province of the Oceania island nation of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea and its provinces have unique flags.

The silhouette of a lakatoi canoe represents tradition. It is set over a blue background representing the sea. A large star (for Central Province) and five smaller stars (the 5 districts) are set over a red background representing the land. I like the british flag as it is minimalist with no symbols on it, making it a symbol in itself.

of course if scotland leaves, I wonder...do we get to keep it? I hope so as the old one is rubbish.
