No. I think it is perfectly acceptable for a parent to try to convince their child to live the way the parent would prefer. I think it's perfectly acceptable for the parent to be disappointed if their child chooses not to do so. That obviously doesn't make it acceptable for parents to kill their children, but neither does one parent being a worthless asshole mean that no parents should be permitted to try to maintain some aspects of their native culture in a foreign country.

While certainly it's fine to want one's children to hold on to one's cultural roots... this is disgusting.

And I think the OP makes a good point. One should not have unrealistic expectations that a child one raises won't absorb some of the cultural values of the country within which he/she is raised. It's bound to happen, and pretending that somehow it won't is living in a mental fantasy land. To paraphrase the OP, if one doesn't want one's child to absorb a certain country's cultural values, one shouldn't raise them there.

Because they're from a backwards country to begin with, and are set in their ways? Add OMG my daughter iz teh slutz, and we have a recipe for disaster in some cases. Most people probably move here for a few good reasons, but otherwise are in love with their culture, as with everything they need to take the good with the bad (even if its only a perceived bad).

Human beings are really good at living in denial, especially when they have compelling reason to do so. The people who do move to other countries yet expect their children not to absorb any of that nation's culture generally make the move for jobs, and probably view themselves as residing there only temporarily.

I think there's more to this than three articles. But the idea of killing your own kid because you don't like the culture they are adopting is pretty old fashioned, almost victorian and quite sad.

That's the problem with gulf state Arabs their dads are all pyhsco.
Lebanese and Palestine girls are much more likely to have sane fathers in my experience, unless of course your Jewish.

I don't have any problem with people moving to the United States even if they disagree with our culture- lord knows we've got a whole bunch of native born folk in the deep South that disagree with mainstream culture. Of course, my problem with those backward native born Americans is my same problem with this man- its wrong to force your children to have a culture they dont' want to have.

This is very sad; I mean while its perfectly okay to encourage your kids to embrace your ethnic culture; you have to be equally as accepting if they choose not to.

I remember reading about this idiot family that moved here and didn't want their kid socialising with anyone, lest he come to think that gays and Aboriginals are humans too.
