We need guidance, we've been misled

Postby Dolbri » Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:08 pm

Over the past few years, some remarkable changes have been happening in the European political landscape.

All over Europe, populists of all kinds, nationalists, and other random right-wing parties have been gaining popularity. The traditional parties lose ground election after election. Many people are excessively worried about immigrants and islam. More people than ever are depressed, and some are looking for meaning in all sorts of religions.

There was a politician on TV just now who thought that the problem is a lack of leadership. The people no longer feel like the government is, well, governing the nation. The people no longer know where they are going, and they feel politicians don't know either. There are no more leaders.

Do you think this is true? Do the people need guidance, and is there currently a lack of guidance?
And is there a difference, concerning this, between the USA and Europe?

Well I certainly think people need to know the government is there. Not some corrupt money grabbing position like some Euro countries are having it.

So I suppose you don't want a government at all. Is this merely your opinion, or is it shared by most people where you live? Because I realize that the people on NSG are probably more independent than the average, so the question is how "the masses" feel about this.

This is why Government should stick to Governing, and avoid micromanaging.

A lack of guidance in Europe, sometimes it seems like theres entirely too much, and yet your governments are having considerable trouble dealing with people's concerns, such as immigration. If they can't find these answers in mainstream parties, they'll find answers elsewhere.

I'm not sure there is any difference between the US and Europe except that we tend to view our politics as between two choices, either republican or democrat, though that may change (and we are overdue for it), it doesn't seem likely.

Well, it's my opinion that Europe should be a model for the U.S. So they can't be doing EVERYTHING badly.

Possibly because in the 1980s most of Europe brought in conservative governments, then in the mid-1990s this changed. Now we're at the end of that 15-year cycle, and everyone reckons conservatism is the way forward. Roll on 2025.
