Atheists and Agnostics at Christmas/Easter

Postby Cerod » Fri Mar 15, 2013 4:17 pm

I was wondering how exactly atheists and agnostics celebrate religious themed holidays such as Christmas or Easter, do you eat turkey, use Christmas trees or sing carols at Christmas? Do you even celebrate Christmas and if so, how? Do you celebrate Easter, and if so how? Do you wish people merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

I cannot answer this as I am a Catholic and celebrate it with mass, turkey, trees, cards etc. etc.

The same way Christians celebrate Pagan holidays.
Spend time with family and eat good food.

I celebrate Christmas and Easter both, due to the fact that I always have. But I do so largely in a secular manner, save perhaps for visits to my family church as part of the days events. I have friends in the congregation, so it's more of a friendly duty.

We celebrate them in a secular, commercial manner. Easter is a chocolate festival. Christmas is almost entirely about gifts, roast chickens and Mariah Carey's Christmas albums.
This was formerly a signature. One day, it may return to its splendid past. In the meantime, enjoy some pictures of my cats.

This.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

I don't celebrate Easter but I do celebrate christmas but in a secular manner. I don't allow carolers on my property and I certainly don't do any church related shit. I also spend christmas with my friends instead of my family. I still give and receive gifts though.

What is it with Christians having a hard time thinking that non-Christians are human beings?

Yeah pretty much this. Cultural Christianity as some put it.

That's horrible. Why would you scream at traffic? What have those motorists ever done to you?

You know all that tangential shit that hangs around those holidays that seem to have nothing at all to do with the birth or execution of a savior, like jolly old men delivering presents or bunnies that hide eggs?

That stuff.

Personally, I just consider Christmas to be the Christian version of the winter solstice festival, considering it has more to do with that than the birth of a doctor.

I celebrate Easter like my ancestors did in Europe... by hiding in our attic for 24 hours.

As well as not eating any 'leavened bread' just the thought of 'leavened bread' makes me sick.

What does turkey or Christmas trees have to do with Christianity?

Turkey isn't really Christmas food in my country, regardless of religion.
