Randomly Meeting Famous People

Postby Neo Art » Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:52 am

So, I live in the greater Boston area are, and last night, for Halloween, a few friends and I decided to go up to the Beacon Hill area and observe. This area, for those who don't know, is a very affluent part of town, with extremely expensive townhouses, and numerous families. So every year, the police block off two parallel streets (and the connecting street between them, forming a sort of H shape) and open the area to trick or treaters. A bunch of costumed kids and families, highly decorated homes, families passing out candy to the kids and apple cider to adult passerbys, extremely well decorated houses, it's just a generally cool evening to witness, especially on a Friday night.

So anyway, I was with a crowd of folks and we were just sort of wandering around, we went down one street, and turned left onto the side street. Of course, this being the intersection of these crowds, the area was packed with people turning off and on the street, kids getting candy, being squeezed off by cars parked on the street etc. Anyway so I was in the back of our group, dropping a quick text to my girlfriend when I looked up, and noticed I had gotten separated from the rest of my group, and the crowd had filled in between us.

So, to try and catch up, I tried to go on the sidewalk, but that being crowded too, I stepped up on the bottom step of the stoop of the house I was in front, to try and cut a few feet across that way. I didn't really see who was sitting with a bowl of candy at the top of the stoop, except to register it looked like an elderly couple. Anyway, so I step up on the stairs, and suddenly a strong breeze came up. Which caused the giant jack o lantern shaped balloon a man was holding to blow forward, and smack me right in the face.

Now, it hurt about as much as you'd imagine getting hit in the face with a balloon would. Which is to say, not at all. But between this random object smacking me right in the face, and the reverberating BOOOOOOONG it made when it hit me, I'll be honest, it scared the crap out of me.

So I stepped back, tripping on the stairs I was on, and grabbing for the railing of the stairs, to stop me from falling straight back. The man whose house it was, and whose stoop I was assaulting, who had seen it happen, speaks up with an "are you alright?". Having managed to get myself back upright I turn to tell him that yes, I'm perfectly fine.

Finding myself face to face with Massachusetts Senator, and 2004 Presidential Candidate John Kerry. Who had been sitting on his stoop of his Beacon Hill townhouse handing out candy to costumed children on halloween. And whose stoop I just tripped over.

I'd like to say he invited me in and we chatted for a while and now I've mad friends with a US senator. But I won't. We had a quick hellos, a handshake, and I was back to find my friends who, at this point, had realized I was talking to a US senator.

ANYWAY, to make this "not a blog", this leads into my actual topic. Ever meet someone famous, randomly and accidentally? On the street, or in a bar, or stumbling on to a movie set? Share.

Cool, the most I've met is Bernard Cornwell, Daragh O'mally and the rest of the Sharp cast. :geek:

I bumped into Dennis Quaid at a Cracker Barrel a year or so ago, I guess.

That's as far as meeting famous people goes for me.

American Football Player Jerome Bettis when I was in college; we literally just bumped into each other on the crosswalk.

I've met several more celebrities while working.

I once spent a flight surrounded by the whole Italian U-21 national team + staff.

I was sat behind the manager and he was talking tactics to someone, probably would have been quite interesting had I spoken a word of Italian.

Hmmm. Well?

Dr. Jane Goodall. Met her once and she tried to set me up at one of places in Africa but it fell through at the last moment. :(

Max Barry. ;)

Red Skelton. He gave a talk at my school and being the student body controller; I got to meet him at a reception.

George Lukas. He is the godfather of one of my wife's friends. The friend has a big birthday bash and George always shows up for a little. Chitchated over a glass of wine. I purposely avoided "shop talk" but still found him not too friendly.

My sister rode and elevator with Madonna and said she had an expression of somebody farted the whole time.

I'd be scared as hell if I saw John Kerry's face on a dark night in the middle of Halloween too.

Being a part time sound technician, I've met a few famous-ish musicians (mostly annoying DJ's). I've met a few important people in the UK government too. My grandparents knew some important people (including.. the queen, somewhat), my grandfather was famous enough to have his on wikipedia page..

Christ, Neo! Talk about luck! It's ironic since I just finished watching Recount... Wrong Democrat but... :?

Anyways, I did randomly bump into Kenneth McClintock after a competition of mine. He's the father of another kid, and so I got to chat with him for a few minutes.

Kenneth McClintock was the President of Puerto Rican Senate and is now serving as Secretary of State of Puerto Rico.

Other than this, haven't met any famous people... randomly.

In Japan, well, that's another story.

Rowan Atkinson? This was a while ago, though.

When I worked at RenFaire, I met a couple of moderately famous people. One was Claudia Christian (Ivanova on Babylon 5). I actually saw and talked to her several different times over the course of several different Faires. She's quite tiny and a very pleasant person, if a bit "fun-loving."

The other one was the guy who played John-Boy on the Waltons - I forget his name.

Seen from a distance at Faire, but with no interaction - Adrian Paul (Highlander), Michael Jackson (he was dressed as a clown) and Jamie Lee Curtis (I think).

Every member of the federal council of Switzerland with the exception of Didier Burkhalter and a couple of more or less well known actors, musicians and novelists.

Norman Beaton (Desmond from the Channel 4 TV series Desmond's) and Saeed Jaffrey while out out for a walk in a park in London.

My sister and her mates met Johnny Borrell, leader singer of Razorlight, on a Ferry coming back from a festival.

Quite a lot of times.

Possibily, the most internationally famous guy I met randomly was Dario Fo (Nobel laureate for literature). We just happened to be sitting on the same bench in Piazza Fontana one evening, reading the same newspaper, and we had a chat about politics.

Cathy Rogers-Former host of Junkyard wars. My dad worked on the show, so I was able to see part of filming, and meet her.

Uh, Robbie Coltrane was once in the same cake shop as me. I'm sure that surprises nobody who's heard of him. He's an arse though.
And Billy Connolly walked past me on the way out of the cinema.

So met... no. Been in the immediate vicinity of? Yes.

I'm sure that's truly changed my life for the better in ways too subtle for me to appreciate.
