St John's Water Dog.

Or Dodo. They're finger licking extinct!
Read "A Man For All Seasons". That explains most of what I believe in. Except the Catholic bits.

Outside of here I do lead a rather unusual and colourful life. As a Spinster.

Aw, damn, is it officially extinct now? I didn't hear. They were cute. :(

(Also, I recommend making some serious changes to Chinese infrastructure before bringing it back, or finding someplace other than the Yangtze for it to live, because putting it back in an area which had become pretty much a hellscape for it just so it can go extinct all over again seems rather cruel.)

Unless I'm misunderstanding the article severely, that's not recreating a genome. That's creating a new genome. Pretty big difference.

The genes for teeth were still there, they just aren't normally expressed. The problem with cloning a thylacine is that, after over one hundred years of sitting around, quite often preserved in a manner not conducive to DNA preservation (on account of no one knowing about DNA), the DNA in all the specimens has degraded to the point that it's entirely possible that sections of the genome might be genuinely gone. As in, not present in any specimen. Granted, there's quite a few specimens, and not all have had what's left of the genome sequenced, so maybe, eventually, we could piece it together.

Of course, since Murphy's a dick, that's probably when we'll find out that something we thought was thylacine DNA was actually a contaminant.

I really need to read up on genes and DNA and stuff because I honestly don't know if I'm even using the right words.

Only if the conditions which drove them to extinction were removed. As it stands their existence was torture that I would not wish on anyone. I'll let Douglas Adams, explain:

Incidentally, since Adams and the baiji river dolphin have been brought up, I'll take this opportunity to plug the book he wrote about the experience he discusses in that link, Last Chance to See. It is brilliant, hilarious, sad, educational, and generally well, well worth reading.

The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.
