While I dislike all of the above, I have to say the US and France because they are Republican.

I was more refering to their government then their people or exports. People are the same verywhere and thus I dont hate whole groups. And their exports are good.

The SVP, who over 30% of their backwards-arsed population voted for are absolutely not kick-ass though, and nor is the fact that women only got the vote in some cantons in the 1990s. They're utter plebs, man.

In what way? Because many of those nations are republics or constitutional monarchies. And besides, Sarkozy isn't a member of the French Republican (right wing) party anyway...

Switzerland and Sweden by a mile.
Edit: How is the US first? We're in between the mostly free britain and the extremely corrupt Italy.

On a scale of 1 to 10 of western freedom, US is probably a 5.5.

Not that this was my shout, but eh we can say what we like and do what we like sans interference from the government. Just because we can't kick about with guns or whatever doesn't mean we're unfree.

Except the government has the power to pretty much observe whatever youre doing whenever it wants.

Good strawman. I dont think I brought up guns. Nice try attempting to pick a fight though, but youre wasting your time with me. Im not an NRA member.

But hey if you prefer the broad brush approach.

Right?

The Lords and the Monarchy, and that's without going into the EU's Courts which could be used to lodge a claim against anything the government here does.
If one of them is the Queen Im going to laugh at you.

I don't really see why, if things were going extremely wrong, she steps in and dissolves parliament. Would probably be the last action of the monarchy in this state, but it'd be a pretty solid swansong.
EDIT: Besides, unelected checks dont make for much of a check.

They do if it turns out you voted in parties to both chambers and your head of government which turned out to be extremely dodgy, at which point you have zero checks.

Yeah, the Lords and the Monarchy. Those are two entities with the power to fight a corrupt state. Its not like theyre basically symbolic roles anymore or anything.

In the UK you have no means of fighting poor, corrupt, or obtrusive laws outside of passing a new one. No judicial review. The PM is held in check by parliment, but parliment is not really held in check by the PM.

Im not saying the UK is some police state, but pretending like its so much freer then the US is fucking hilarious. Thats what prompted my original comment. Im also fighting off a viscious hangover and dont really have the will to do a battle of "what ifs" and government philosophy.

Wanna just go back to maing fun of the Swiss?
