In the case of Finland, we actually only got aid FROM the Germans (the Brits and whatnot gave us moral support, but that doesn't help when you're getting shot at), so no go with that. USSR was likely to collapse when it did anyway, so that's a no go too. Sweden was neutral and never was taken over by the Germans nor the Soviets, so that, too, is a no go.

WAT!

I didnt say it made any sense, just that that was what it was attempting to do,

Although I voted for Sweden, keep in mind that the US is strong enough to endure eight years of DUBYA with virtually no rioting...

And Sweden isn't on the poster because they've been neutral since 1814, baaaaarely beating out Switzerland.

You're right! I guess seeing all the other Nordic countries in it made me instantly think that it's in there too even though it's not. But the other countries still stand, the US never did anything to "liberate" Finland, and didn't do much to aid the countries which the USSR took over. They ended up liberating themselves with the collapse of the USSR (which happened on its own without help from the US).

Mainly because of the cannabis laws and the great infrastructure of the country.

That's what I was thinking. Half of the countries on their are Soviet Republics that formed after the fall of the USSR in 1990's. I suppose you could say the US "liberated" them by dismantling the USSR by Supply Side Economics, but that's a stretch. They formed naturally, the US never really had anything to do with those nations

Well run, clean, safe, good economy. Basically lots of good stuff there.

To someone who only considers a direct democracy as a democracy, Switzerland is closer to a real democracy than most.

The EU isn't as representative as they would have you believe, and they aren't "all controlling" either. Case in point: Both France and Germany run deficits much larger than 3% (the supposed stipulation to remain part of the EU) and the European Central Bank doesn't do anything about it.Why? Because the EU is subordinate to France and Germany because without them they have no legislative power whatsoever. The same problem persists with the UN and the US.

United States, because I fucking hate parliamentary democracies and I like the fact that the American president is a powerful figure. I'd prefer if Congress had less power.

Less power? If anything they need more, or at least a better way to get legislation passed.

Of course, and it has to be to protect people's rights. It is absolutely right, just, and fair for the constitution to be undemocratic in some ways to protect people's rights. But it is good to have some democracy as well, and I think we should have more in the senate. Majority rule is a basic principle of democracy. Supermajority requirements are as undemocratic as a requirement for unanimity would be.

I'd add that the way the US Senate is operating right now is unlike it has ever acted ever before in it's history. Cloture votes (the whole supermajoity needed to bring things to a vote business) never used to be used to block every single piece of legislation before the body. In fact, Senators used to routinely vote to end debate and then vote against final passage of the bill. The first "yea" vote wasn't a vote of support, it was just a standard uninteresting parliamentary vote. Now...well...we just can't have that sort of going along to get along-ness!

I'm with ya that filibusters need to be limited in some way...not sure what the best way to do that is, but...yeah/

None of those governments are really good. I suppose Id have to say that the US's system is the best of a line of imperfect systems, but that doesnt mean I love it.

For me it was between Germany and Switzerland, but Switzerland prevailed. I think this is due to the fact that they are always trying to do their best to settle international disputes in a nonpartisan way.
