How many swords, excepting wallhangers and federschwerts, can be honestly described as being designed *not* to be useful in the assault of someone else? It's not a LARPing boffer, it's a piece of hardened, sharpened and balanced steel based off of older designs of hardened, sharpened and balanced steel that were made so people could fight and possibly kill other people who may or may not have been holding pieces of hardened, sharpened and balanced steel.

At what point there is that *not* an item intended for assault?

Hell, while we're at it, we should ban bokken from the civilian market as well, because the LAPD's mounted cops use them as well as police batons for riot duty. Ergo, they're intended to beat down and suppress others; the very example of assault.

These are the people we pay to make decisions that affect the country
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7m6aewquco

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/20/biden-shotgun-advice-draws-quizzical-response/
This double barreled shotgun thing is an issue for many reasons, but form a home defense perspective firing two blasts means it is over. According to the Portland Police Policies Study Council from '88-91, Portland police fired a total of 186 shots and scored 112 hits - missing 40 percent of their shots.http://www.theppsc.org/Archives/DF_Articles/Files/Oregon/92-Oregonian_Study.htm.

If police officers are missing 40 percent of the time, how well do you think you'll preform under pressure?

And this is how well informed they are
http://blogs.denverpost.com/thespot/2013/04/03/as-lead-sponsor-in-house-on-gun-legislation-rep-diana-degette-appears-to-not-understand-how-they-work/93506/

These debates are pointless as they are a battle of words between the familiar and the ignorant, the urban/suburban majority and the rural minority. Rational ignorance is a real part of life, I don't know the cost of tea in China because I have other concerns, but, rational ignorance becomes irrational when you don't bother to do silly things like research into topics that affect your life, and the lives of others.

My wife and I own guns. Several. Many even. We hunt, and enjoy range time for target shooting. Why do we enjoy target shooting? Because it develops, reinforces, and ensures readiness of fundamental skills related to survival when we're out picking berries for jam, or fishing a sweet spot, or gathering fireweed to make honey, and a bear wants the real estate more than us. My wife has an AR-15 in .308. She's 5'0" and 110lbs. with her parka and mukluks on, and she is comfortable shooting it. Her "Assault Weapon" won't kill a bear or moose without the kind of precision and familiarity developed with thousands of rounds of practice.

If you want to crusade against something, crusade against mandatory minimums for drug sentences, crusade for transparency in medical costs, crusade against standardized testing and a faltering education system, crusade against lazy people making decisions based on soundbites, crusade for gay equality, crusade for puppies, crusade against white privilege or income disparity between men and women. Do *NOT* listen to a few soundbites and read a headline and support knee jerk partisan bullshit that ruins my lifestyle. Between living and trying to save for the future, my wife's "assault weapon" allows us to offset food expenses greatly, and with average cost of living here 37% higher than the lower 48, that matters. Quit crusading against my peace of mind when I'm at work.

Edited to add: I live in Alaska.

Unfortunately for people like the above poster, the rural minority who actually use firearms for defending their livestock or themselves against predators, or for hunting to feed their families, are far too under-represented in the American political system. Far more represented are the "hunting is just a cruel means of entertainment" or "guns are just for shooting people" lobbyists.

At this point, I've just gotten to the point of asking:

"You know what? Why shouldn't I get to own an 'assault weapon'? It's well-established that I have a long and documented history of not shooting up a mall or a preschool. I'm a loyal American citizen, a prospective member of the armed forces, and have an IQ of 126. Why not?"
Sometimes I'm reading through military threads here, and I stop and think "What the hell is wrong with all of us?" But then I get on Facebook, and realize I'd rather be insane than an idiot.

By your same thesis, the bowler in cricket is not part of the sport, bowling is not a sport at all and shooting a goal in soccer is not part of the sport, merely recreational.

Plus if someone wanted to kill someone they could just as easily hit them with a car or drowned them. Anyway, did you just unintentionally advocate the validity of firearms ownership as a tool of self-defense? I think you did.

EDIT: Then again, you might have done it intentionally. Haven't been paying attention, you might be a pro-gun fellow as well.
