Should Assault Weapons be banned?

Abolish government is the better idea, then you can own whatever you like within reason. But, not going to happen soon. Till then guns will be banned in some areas and legal in others.

Need is irrelevant. Their capacity to kill is irrelevant. The fact is they are completely negligible to the crime rate. The fact is the entire argument is based on the fact that "assault weapon" is a scary word and people are stupid.

The home/self defense use is obvious. Also, an AR15 is a very good (IMO excellent) target rifle, and can be used for hunting as well (due to it's ability to be configured with different calibers, stocks, optics, magazines, etc).

The Rangers in my state periodically go into the woods and weed out the deer population with rifles, because they get out of control. Some states have bounties on animals. Like Texas: you can make a living collecting the bounty on wild pigs there.

Actually I don't want to 'ban' anything, save smoking and child abuse; since some places want to ban guns in the US it is a forgone conclusion that irrespective of the argument, some areas will ban assault rifles.

A kid in lecture today tried to say "salt truck" (ice is a problem on MN roads) and ended up saying "assault truck". After some questioning, we discovered that it was not, in fact, an assault truck, since it wasn't black and didn't have any lasers or foregrips on it.

So what is you position on firearms for self-defense? Forget the "overthrow the government B.S., Self defense is the primary reason to own a firearm with recreational shooting a close second.

Actually some of us work out reasonable compromises, which are ignored, and whenever the pro-gun people do compromise (not really a compromise as the gun-control lobby gives up nothing and a compromise is a two-way thing) the gun-control lobby then demands more. Not only are they not worthy of respect (see my earlier post on this), they cannot be trusted.
