Abolish government is the better idea, then you can own whatever you like within reason. But, not going to happen soon. Till then guns will be banned in some areas and legal in others.

Possibly, but still don't see the point in having them in the first place...unless you are planning a personal war against the government, that couldn't be won regardless.

The home/self defense use is obvious. Also, an AR15 is a very good (IMO excellent) target rifle, and can be used for hunting as well (due to it's ability to be configured with different calibers, stocks, optics, magazines, etc).
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

The Rangers in my state periodically go into the woods and weed out the deer population with rifles, because they get out of control. Some states have bounties on animals. Like Texas: you can make a living collecting the bounty on wild pigs there.

What kind of living? Quit my job and move to Texas, or is it going to be just enough for hookers and blow?

What about rails? Did it have a bayonet lug? Could it be fitted with "the shoulder thing that goes up"?

Probably because they got bored of regulating guns, and decided to regulate their time doing it.

Not going to take a side, but this is just BS. How will a tyrannical government take over the US? And how would a rifle help against a trained army, an air force, tanks, and a navy?

The United States has the most advanced, well trained, and deadliest military in the world.

Some Texan hill-billy redneck with a M16 wouldn't stand a chance against nuclear submarines, main battle tanks, predator drones, stealth bombers, cruise missiles, and God knows what they have in Area 51, the Cheyenne mountain complex, or some other secret military installations where they're creating top-secret weapons of the future.

Not going to touch that argument.

So what is you position on firearms for self-defense? Forget the "overthrow the government B.S., Self defense is the primary reason to own a firearm with recreational shooting a close second.

Edit Oh and leave out the "Texan hill-billy redneck" stereotype. Using it makes you look bad.

That's both terrible grammar and no reason to ban "assault weapons".

Actually, it is largely an issue of logistics; gun bans are impossible to make effective, since they will not actually remove any weapons from the population, and especially not the weapons used to commit crimes. Principles are debatable. Facts and past experience with this kind of thing are not.

Actually some of us work out reasonable compromises, which are ignored, and whenever the pro-gun people do compromise (not really a compromise as the gun-control lobby gives up nothing and a compromise is a two-way thing) the gun-control lobby then demands more. Not only are they not worthy of respect (see my earlier post on this), they cannot be trusted.
