I guess it depends on tastes... and that's not a two-valued issue. For some (likely, for most), it's a combination of factors: their own sex, their own gender, the other's sex and the other's gender.

I base willingness for romance on whether or not I would be capable of sexual intimacy with that person. I think if a self-described man had a vagina I would find myself capable of feeling that kind of connection. I'm still young, so I don't have it very well mapped out, but that seems to be where I gravitate.

I've only read a minority of pages in this thread (I'm sure not spending hours reading them all), but I've noticed that many who say that not being told is a breach of trust also say that if they were told right away they would not date the person, which leads me to believe that, at least for some of them, it's transsexuality per se that is the determining factor.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that too, and then the whole "but they violated my trust!" is moot.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I have a strong suspicion that trans* people probably have ways of testing the waters and seeing how their partner might react. I imagine they don't want to date anyone who'd go "ewww, gross!" anymore than those types would want to date them.
