Transgender (when used as an adjective) is the more appropriate term (purely because it is more or less all-encompassing), though if you have to shorten it, using 'trans*' is the best option.

Tranny is kinda like nigger, except "T-word privileges" are easier to lose. I had them, once, by virtue of asking a trans friend, but lost them right away for posting in a stupid thread on NSG.

That probably has some influence. Although the predominant factor is probably that I simply don't see pictures of the japanese transgenders that are... not so convincing. Since in the perception of the common person, the fact that there is a transgender ex-man that looks masculine is not very noteworthy and they don't point it out if they see a picture of that. Whereas they may if they're hot because "zomg look at this hot transsexual".

I'd have absolutely no issues with it, nor would I have issues with my partner taking some time to disclose.

Going purely on physical aspects (which are pretty much all secondary for me anyway), I think it's less likely I'd date a trans* man who hasn't had SRS, however, given that having a penis is a pretty big reason why I'll date a man as opposed to a woman. It would also make a trans* woman who hasn't had SRS ideal.
