Why I'm So Manly

Postby Vittos Ordination » Fri Oct 30, 2009 6:35 am

I don't vote!

It seems voting for a losing candidate is a emasculating experience, even if you know your candidate is going to lose.

it is better to not vote at all than to vote for the person you think is going to win even though you dont like his policies.

and it eliminates shrinkage.
whatever

It does feel pretty shit when the person/party you voted for loses.

I suppose that would explain also why those who voted and supported the winner gets very hyped up and aggressive to an extent and likes to gloat about how they won.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

This explains a lot about the behavior of the men in particular on NSG around election time, actually.

it also explains nicely why (in the US national elections) its necessary to not reveal vote totals before all the polls have closed. they dont want insecure men to rush to the polls at the last minute so they can vote for the person who seems to be winning.

I just wonder if it matters if you voted or if you just supported someone.

I wonder how close the effects are to watching a sports team, as well.

its probably similar.

which ought to lead to a huge decline in manliness when you consider that, taking MLB baseball as an example, every team loses each year but one.

hmmmm you arent a big sports fan are you?

yeah i can see how that would work. yeah yeah youd need some kind of testosterone suppressor at the end of the superbowl in a truly winning year just so that the women could get some peace for the next few months.

until obama, i had never backed a winning candidate for anything higher than city council. as i said to the internet via txt from the victory rally in grant park, "so this is what winning feels like".

i wonder, though, if there is any difference between personality types in this effect - after all, much of the basis of male support for conservative politicians is the idea that they are big strong men who should dominate, unlike those wussy democrats who want steal my money to 'help' people not like me. in other words, perhaps right-wing authoritarian types are more likely to feel the loss of hierarchical status when losing to democrats than the reverse. especially intriguing along these lines is that, unlike studies that have been done for sports fans, people on the winning side didn't seem to see a spike in testosterone levels.

I don't consider not voting manly. I consider it stupid.

You didn't vote? You've got no right to bitch about the people in office. If you voted, especially if you voted for the person in office, you have every right to complain.

if someone views the entire system as illegitimate, why should participating in an illegitimate process be required for complaining? that makes no sense at all.

anyways, personally i treat voting as a very low-cost tactic with potentially huge impacts. i learned my nader lesson.

yes, the system is illegitimate, but its not like a lack of turnout is going to make the system collapse on its own or that the revolution will be only for those who didn't vote in the last election. and until the revolution is on offer, i have an obligation to do what i can to prevent harm and suffering in the situation i find myself in.

Oh. So if none of the candidates are anywhere near representing your views, you have to choose one of the candidates who don't represent your views in order to be able to justly complain about the candidates not representing your views?

See, I have the manhood to spare. I vote for Ralph Nader every year because if I don't, I might find myself molesting the Statue of Liberty in a testosterone-fueled frenzy of manly potency.

It's really for the best. Of course, should Ralph Nader ever win, you might all want to get an umbrella. *nod*

I suppose they could leave a slot on the ballot so folks could vote for themselves.

Simply by assuming the office of president, the candidate has accepted duties that go against my morals. I know that there is no president who will not reside over an extremely aggressive warfare-welfare state.

I also believe that political success will undermine the goals that I have, so even voting for a president who I would actually approve of is counter-productive.

Therefore, I will never vote.

EDIT: Democracy does more to subvert the people for the government than it does to subvert the government for the people.
