As far as I'm concerned, this is just more evidence of how grossly underfunded asteroid tracking (like the space program in general) is, how lucky we've been so far, and how a lot of people are going to die some day if we don't deal with this.

But it also shows what catastrophes could happen and that they are probably more likely to happen than we think.

The Romulan Republic wrote:Of course, its not like this has never happened before. The most famous example would have to be the Tunguska explosion, which actually did do a lot of damage (fortunately it was over Siberia so their wasn't a massive death toll like their would have been had it gone off over a city). The first article states that ones like this Indonesian asteroid should happen "every 2 to 12 years on average."
What's suprising (and inexcusable) is that most people seem utterly ambivalent to the fact that these things happen quite frequently, that their's currently very little we can do to protect ourselves, and that consequently its really only a matter of luck that one hasn't killed a huge number of people yet.
Edits to fix quote.

Rather higher than I feel comforatable with. These things aren't that rare, actually. But it also shows what catastrophes could happen and that they are probably more likely to happen than we think.
Exactly. If this asteroid had been a little bit bigger, this story wouldn't be a curiosity, it would be one of the worst disasters in history.

Yes, it would be cool to see, as long as it wasn't a bit bigger and closer.
