I never understood the uproar over the gov't looking up what you buy. As long as you have nothing to hide, why should you care?

It's none of their business what I spend my money on.

Or what I check out from the library. Or what I write, and to whom, in e-mails.

Paying with a debit card works the same as paying with cash. As to the rest, I really don't care if the gub'ment can look up what I'm purchasing.

And what is wrong with paper trails? I like paper trails.... paper trails help me when people are trying to dick me over. The only people who don't like paper trails are people trying to dick other people over.

Yes but they dont look at every transaction you make. Only if you are suspected of crime and the transaction is thought to have something to do with the crime.
Government neither has time nor money nor manpower to look at every single transaction.

I have nothing to hide, but that doesn't mean I'm comfortable with people seeing my shit. I want privacy. I've nothing to hide in my house, but if someone set up a system of cameras to monitor my room 24/7, I'd be pissed.

I have more things to hide than Anders Behring Breivik. :p Not really though, it is just the principle of being able to have a medium of exchange which is truly private. I prefer cash and will continue to use it as long as I'm able to.

They don't, but so what? Not everybody is literate either nor can everybody see, but neither one of those makes the written word a bad idea. In a large, modern society, the lowest common denominator is very low. That shouldn't hold the rest of us back.

More durable than paper, but not indestructible. They go through the wash just fine which is handy but the ink is subject to fading and and chemical damage just like any ink and they can still be torn or burnt.

I only had problem of fading in Nepal but as long as value and signature was visible it worked as legal tender. It never tore and why will anyone burn it...

Hopefully.

Realistically speaking there are way too many transactions for them to track. So they set rules. For example cash transactions of $10,000 + trigger a report.

They can check what I check out at a library without a warrant though. That's wrong.

Yep, I do that, too. I actually use two debit cards - one direct to my checking account, which I avoid using except in emergencies, and another linked to a PayPal account for day-to-day spending.

I'm considering getting a credit card for the sole purpose of paying bills; since those would be relatively-consistent payments, it would make the credit card payment managable and predictable, while also helping me build up a currently-nonexistent credit score.
