NSG being NSG, people here will be interested to learn that John Paul I was the first Pope since the 10th century to take a previously unused name since... Pope Lando.

So I would suggest that Cardinal Turkson go for Pope Lando II if he gets elected. It keeps the Papal Star Wars connection going after the Emperor resigns.

Further to the above, after hours of research in the secret Vatican archives I have discovered astonishing evidence, in a medieval manuscript containing what's believed to be an accurate representation of Pope Lando, that Cardinal Turkson wouldn't be the first black Pope (if elected).

Not much change in the Papal race.

Since yesterday Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy) has moved back into fifth with Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi (Italy) taking a big jump back into sixth along with Cardinal Leonardo Sandri (Argentina) .

Well most secular people really don't like any of the papal candidates, and as long as he's (small-o) orthodox enough he'll be able to muster at least some support from the Cardinals.

Looks like you're right Onracon!

Big movements in the papal race this morning.

Archbishop Angelo Scola (Italy) has taken first spot back over Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) by just a hair. And Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Italy) is hot on their heels. Just a shade off the lead.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) has steadied in fourth and Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy) remains in fifth though support for him has weakened.

The Pope has left the Vatican by helicopter (I don't know if he flew it himself - he is a qualified pilot and has apparently has flown it on the same journey multiple times before) and arrived at the Castel Gandolfo. We're now two hours away from the sede vacante.

Meanwhile, Panorama, an Italian news magazine (make of that what you will), has apparently reported that Cardinal Bertone allowed police to intercept phone calls and emails within the Curia, which it claimed is basically spying. If the Cardinals based in the Vatican a) think this is true, and b) think this means they were being spied on by Bertone/with Bertone's consent, then I can't quite imagine it helping his chances.

I'm not sure what Oprah has to do with the fact that females are generally not allowed leadership positions (or any positions) in the catholic church.
