Not much change at the top of the leader today.

Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) has strenghtened slightly in first. Archbishop Angelo Scola (Italy) and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Italy)have not changed from yesterday. Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) is just treading hold water in fourth.

The big surpise is Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy) who has now jumped into fifth after being well back in the pack. Erdo and Sandri are both falling back to the pack quite quickly.

No real change in any of the other races though Africa and South America have both strengthened overnight.

as pope joan is an ns member we should ask him. nothing like getting it from the horses mouth, so to speak.

Pope Joan?

That hoax was so silly it was comprehensively demolished as the 17th century; by a Protestant. And even in the medieval legend her deposition had nothing to do with Jews, but rather - as Tsaraine points out - with the discovery that she was pregnant; she was supposed to have given birth during a procession from St. Peter's to the Lateran Palace.

I suggest consulting the original source of the most popular version of the myth, the 13th-century Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum.

There are at least three Orthodox parishes in Christchurch - no idea of earthquake damage, though.

Here's an excellent article on what a disaster zone the Curia is right now, how it got there, and the problems that the Papal abdication may raise.

Wrong country, dude. Christchurch is famed for its pure artesian water, filtered through miles and miles of gravel over decades after falling as rain in the Southern Alps. Except for a few months after the earthquakes, we've never had fluoride in our water. :P

And the Anglican, Baptist, and Catholic cathedrals were about equally munted in the quakes. I think the mosque was entirely unscathed though. I'm not sure about the Orthodox, but then the only Orthodox church I've seen in Christchurch is teensy.

Isn't the replacement cathedral meant to be multi-faith or something?

No change at all in the Papal prognostication race since yesterday. The top half dozen have settled into their postion for the moment it seems with Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana).

No change among the name or nation of origin either.

Not much change in the Papal race overnight.

Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) has strengthened slightly. Archbishop Angelo Scola (Italy) has slid back just a bit. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Italy) has slipped considerably and is now in a virtual deadlock with Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada). Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy) has strengthened his hold on fifth and make be primed to move up even further.

Check out the other thread. Petrus romanus Turkman has infallibly decreed that Gaiety ain't part of African culture, therefore Mighty Whitey infected Mother Africa with Gaiety and sullied the purity of the African herren Volk.

Also, paedophilia and gaiety are much of a muchness.

Previous president of Sout Africa decreed "Condoms don't cure AIDS; showering and keeping your fingers crossed cures AIDS."

I suspect Petrus believes the same doctrine, but I ain't heard anything ex cathedra.

Less than three more days of Pope Palpatine? That's sad. The dark side of the force was strong with that one.

Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) is holding steady in first.

Archbishop Angelo Scola (Italy) is steady in second and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Italy) has no change from yesterday.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) has slid a bit but still holds fourth. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (Italy) has nosedived slightly as well.

The big surprise is Cardinal Leonardo Sandri (Argentina) has jumped several spots into sixth and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi (Italy) has moved with him.

Ah, but there are other Star Wars opportunities.

As I said all the way back on page 6 of this thread....

So I would suggest that Cardinal Turkson go for Pope Lando II if he gets elected. It keeps the Papal Star Wars connection going after the Emperor resigns.

The Catholic church needs a definite break from the past.

And they need a business manager more than they need a spiritual leader right now.

More details on Benedict XVI's post-papacy life announced today:

History was made in Rome on Sunday, as Pope Benedict XVI delivered his final Sunday service as pontiff. CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports.

ROME (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will keep the honorific title of "His Holiness" after he abdicates this week and will be known as "pope emeritus," the Vatican said on Tuesday.

He will wear a "simple white cassock" and his papal ring of office will be destroyed according to Vatican tradition, a spokesman told a briefing.

He will lay aside the red "shoes of the fisherman" that have been part of his papal attire and wear brown loafers given to him by shoemakers during a trip to Mexico last year.

Benedict on Thursday will become the first pope in some six centuries to resign instead of ruling for life.

Given the rarity of the occasion, Vatican officials have had to decide what he will be called and how he will dress.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said he will be known as either "pope emeritus Benedict XVI" or "Roman Pontiff emeritus Benedict XVI", be addresses as "Your Holiness," and be referred to as "His Holiness".

The spokesman said Benedict had made the decisions concerning his titles after consulting with Vatican officials.

Further to the above, after hours of research in the secret Vatican archives I have discovered astonishing evidence, in a medieval manuscript containing what's believed to be an accurate representation of Pope Lando, that Cardinal Turkson wouldn't be the first black Pope (if elected).
