My entire class found out I go on here, and as such, I've become an intriguing individual. People are like "what is that", I tell them, and then people generally give me a blank look

Exactly. My standards of humour must be slipping. I should be funnier than this. :? I blame stress from uni work. I'll try to do better next time.

SoWiBi wrote:

Hence also all the sarcastic posts that are so subtle, people have to ask, "Wait, what? I hope you're being sarcastic here."

You've been away for far too long, honey. By now, you already have to be grateful when they do ask that, and not just jump in yelling at you for your "terrible", "in bad taste" post without catching a single whiff of that big ol' stinking pile of sarcasm in every corner of it.

The day I returned, I posted in a few threads and got lots of "I hope you're being sarcastic" responses, or worse. Led me to wonder where NSG's sense of humour had gone. Not to mention all the people who took virtually anything ever posted by Hammurab etc. in any of his incarnations seriously -- you can't get sarcasm much more blatant than that, and yet, "OMG WUT U MEAN." I blame MeansToAnEnd. After his "Bring Back Slavery" thread, it's understandable that NSG's ability to take things with a grain of salt will have more or less evaporated.

Also, I never knew you could use consummate as an adjective.

Yes; it means "the highest or most perfect example of." And as a verb it technically means just "to actualize; make real; legitimize", but as usual the other meaning extrapolated therefrom gets all the attention. Pity. It's a nice word.
So, honoring that new-found knowledge with some inappropriate usage of the word, umm.. wanna consummate some sarcasm with me?

Absolutely.

I'm not entirely sure how that would work, but it's got "consummate", "sarcasm", and "you" in it, which is a good enough start for me. <.<

I'm fairly certain my boyfriend knows about me and NSG. He has occasionally been known to enjoy arguing with strange people about assorted topics himself, so I don't think he even finds my addiction to this forum particularly weird. ;)

Peisandros wrote:Recently my girlfriend of over 6 months saw me on NationStates for the first time. I hadn't told her about it or anything, so when she saw me on last week she was rather inquisitive. I felt a little embarrassed at first, like I was doing something wrong. It's not that she was judging me, she just didn't think I was the kind of person who would be kinda heavily involved in an online game. She has given me a bit of shit for it since then, in a light-hearted way.

It got me thinking, anyone else had significant others inquire about NationStates? What was the result, any funny stories?

Funny stories? No. But stories yes. After my ex cheated on me a few times and somehow made me feel responsible in part for his infidelity, he imposed this 'absolute honesty' thing on us for a while. He hated it when I was online. Actually he hated it when I did anything like reading, or anything else that 'ignored him' even when he was just sitting watching tv. Still, the computer thing was big for him for some reason and I won't even go into how he later on started spying on my MSN usage.

Okay so. I told him I was on NSG, and that I considered a few people here to be friends. I admitted that I flirted with some people too. He got really pissed off, but for some reason never created a nation to spy on me (surprising really). He read over my shoulder a few times though until it became so uncomfortable I just didn't use my computer when he was around. When we split up and I told him that I was into a guy in montreal he asked if that's where I met him, and I said yes we'd talked on NSG for years. He of course assumed that meant we'd been cybersexing for years which is not the case, but whatever. The guilty are always the most suspicious.

Okay, less abusive story. One of my fuckbuddies saw the Jennifer Government logo when I was logging into NSG once and was all, "Oh! Nation States! I've seen that and was thinking about joining, what's your nation name?" I really didn't want him to know it though and told him so. He was a little nonplussed :P

I was a little worried a few times about being on NSG because I'm quite open about certain things here, and because I was in such a small faculty and part of such a small minority within the faculty, it would be easy to pinpoint who I was. Luckily it never became an issue. The issue btw would not be with me being ashamed of what I'm saying but rather with stalkers.

The strange people don't argue, sweetheart; they are the ones who streak the thread and/or just randomly leave muddy fingerprints on the quote buttons.

He'd be pretty masochistic to find your addiction to this forum undesirable, and I hear that's not particularly him, so I see how he wouldn't ;P

I've a habit of "trending" words I like, and I feel deserve it. It's sorta like my own WildLife Fund or Animal Shelter, only minus the wildlife or animals, but plus endangered words. I'll make sure to breathe some life into "consummate" from now on.

Eh, it could have been a lot worse. Just recently, for instance, a middle school student's parents learned that he was using the site and had disseminated personal information, and -- presumably out of fear or what the internet could do to them -- went through and deleted every single one of his posts. No precedent had yet been established for this kind of thing, and [violet] herself had to come down to rule on it. (The nation was deleted as well, even though it had been given to another player, which caused a whole kerfuffle over in the RP forums that was resolved Hataria-style IIRC.)

They didn't really mind if I went on NS, so long as I wasn't going on for three hours a day or more. Which, in retrospect, was a good decision, since it also limited the quantity of my posts that have survived from back then, and I did go on to graduate high school with honours and get into a very good university with a scholarship. <.<
