Well, I wouldn't go that far; there are things that children *should* be told what to do (like "don't kill people" or "eat your vegetables or you won't get dessert"). But at the same time, I agree that once children reach sufficient maturity to begin to formulate beliefs independently from what their parents (or other applicable guardians) believe, they need to be encouraged to independently determine not only *what* they believe, but *why* they believe it. Once an individual determines his/her beliefs independently, that individual will feel like they're *his*/*her* beliefs and stick to them. This applies not only to spirituality, but also to one's perception of morality as a whole.
