I don't think worrying if you are doing something immoral is something that comes with religion.

Correct, but if you claim to like a certain philosopher you should now that he may not have stated all his teachings.

If he did state them then they are still his teachings and his statements even if others also taught similar teachings.

I am a Gnostic Christian.

I am Gnostic because I am constantly hit with the unsettling feeling that the world is inherent evil and/or false; the concept of which is explored in a number of Gnostic scriptures.

I am a Christian for many reasons. First, I agree with Christ's moral teaching. Second, Christianity is part of my national culture/tradition/identity. Third, the thematic battle between light and dark and the heroic sacrifice are both concepts that resonate with me.

Just about every religion in existence today borrows from at least one other religion. Hence my viewpoint that it's better to focus on adhering to the universal concepts - like being kind and generous to others - than to prioritize one particular implementation of those concepts.

Zoroastrianism had that whole emphasis on the battle between light and dark first.

I am an almost extremist christian, just so you know. Anyway, the most likely reason why Jesus used philosophies from other religions is to use something that the, at the time, radical Greeks and Romans would understand. Plus, just because something is used by another religion doesn't make it untrue, as long as it's in the Bible, too. For example, most religions say that murder is bad. This philosophy is in the bible too. And to defend the bible, a lot of Bible teachings have almost direct references in real life. For example, there are water marks on rocks all around the world at one time. The probability of this is happening is so slim, it is almost impossible for it to be coincidence. Ask me about anything in the Bible, if you want.

FYI, I was also raised a Christian in the deep south of the USA. (Georgia)

I'd like to hear your rationale as to why those are inherently bad reasons.

I'm not bashing or attempting to start an argument. Just curious.
