Souseiseki wrote:Gay Marriage: Edward Leigh Fears The 'Merciless Prism Of Equality'

Conservative MP Edward Leigh attacked plans to allow gay people to marry on Tuesday fearing the "merciless prism of equality", much to the confusion of those watching the Commons debate.

The debate on the government's same-sex marriage bill has exposed deep divisions within the Conservative Party on the issue, with some of the most pro-gay marriage and anti-gay marriage speeches coming from the same side of the House.

Leigh said that while people should be treated with tolerance, MPs had to be "very careful that law and reality do not conflict".

"We have to get away from the idea that every single thing in life can be forced through the merciless prism of equality," he said.

He added: "We should be concerned with equality, but not at the expense of every other consideration, not at the expense of tradition."

Leigh also said that marriage was "profoundly pro-woman" as it was "generally men who have the propensity to want to wander off into other relationships" leaving them "holding the baby".

To which another MP responded: "Speak for yourself."

Mr. Leigh, you are a bigot and a git.

True. But the MP who responded is a hero.

I wouldn't dispute it for a second.

So long as the Church of England expects to hold real political power (referencing permanent seats in the House of Lords) then it must accept that it is part of an increasingly, though unofficially, secular state.

is there any reason to be opposed to same sex marriage that has nothing to do with religion?

Historically, there's been plenty of non-religious homophobia from both the Right and the Left.

Without the (alleged) words of a deity to back up the condemnation, it's mostly been "But they're icky, guys"

The Church of England are protesting against the "redefinition of marriage". Because they are, obviously, highly opposed to such things.

Or somebody with a huge stick in their arse saying that homosexuality deviates from the norm and thus must be abolished.

I'm looking at you, Hitler.

Hitler didn't like homosexuality because it was impractical. Just the same reason he didn't like women working, or prostitutes, drunks, the unemployed and the disabled - because they couldn't produce or be part of his Aryan super-soldier race.

You are indeed homophobic.

A homphobe is somebody who HATES gay people, I don't hate them. I just don't agree with it. Do you have a problem with that?

I have a problem with you denying other people equal legal recognition and equal rights because of your prejudices, yes.

You are against same sex marriage. That's like saying you don't hate black people, you just don't want them to get married.

No a homphobes fears homs, I hear it is a most debilitating condition.

You on the other hand do appear to act like you fear homosexuality which would indeed suggest you are a homophobe.

David Cameron believes in the message of Jesus Christ his Saviour, concerning whom; careful perusal of his recorded words turned out to have so little to say on the subject of homosexuality the topic did not even rate a mention.

It isn't my opinion remember. If it was up to me, yes I would probably give gay people the same rights as straights. But it says in the bible that homosexuality is a sin. God never wanted it to happen. As I am an Orthodox Christian, I have to follow that.

Can't wear mixed fabric clothing, either.

You're entitled to hold those beliefs, no matter how stupid I think they are. You are not, however, entitled in any way to force those beliefs upon other people.

Don't marry another man/woman then.

Pretty simple solution.
